If you are planning to attend the game but are a bit intimidated by SF sticker shock, I thought I would share our arrangements. We typically stay at 3 star or above motels and are staying at Best Western Plus Americania on 7th Street just South of Market. We have stayed all over the Bay Area but like this place for price $108 + 35 for parking and location. The City mass transit pass (not BART) is $27 for three days and includes all of the City options including subways, trolleys, busses and cable cars. Our motel is only two blocks from a subway station on Market. I hope we see a lot of red! PS I always hate to suggest hotels since we all have different minimum standards and anyplace in downtown has its negatives, like the street people and costly paid parking.

Here is my suggestion. Do NOT fly into SFO. You can, and I have no problem with the airport as long as you get lucky and the weather is good. BUT of the three major airports in the Bay area, you are most likely to run into delays and cancellations at SFO. When the fog rolls in (which is most common at SFO, not as much in Oakland (which is funny since they are almost directly across the bay from each other), and hardly at all in San Jose) or if it is rainy, SFO slows down to an absolute crawl and flights are delayed hours (missing connections) or outright cancelled. San Jose is probably the closest airport to the stadium. Also, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) can get you easily from Oakland to downtown SF if that is your destination.

Also, for connections, avoid Denver if possible. The other major connections to the Bay area are Salt Lake City and Las Vegas (also Phoenix, but that's a little more out of the way). You all know what happens to Denver airport if they get a snow storm there around the time you are hoping to be traveling. Usually not an issue if you connect through Salt Lake or Vegas.

Have you guys tried AirBnB? I did for last years Big10 Champ Game (bought tix prior to the Wisc debacle) and scored a pretty nice place in the 'artsy' part of Indy for $85 a night. Quick cab or Uber ride to the stadium was like 5 minutes. You'll have to do some due diligence on the AirBnB site but I'd definitely go that route again...and Air is a pretty big deal in the SF area so there might be closer and cheaper options. Just a thought.

Still not sure if we are going, but have a hotel reservation in Milpitas on the VTA light rail line. The rate at chain hotels is less in Milpitas than in San Jose ot Santa Clara (like $20/night). It is a few minutes by train to Levi Stadium, but does require changing trains at the transfer center. The train runs back to Milpitas as late as midnight. Been to San Fran several times, so probably won't go up, but if we do will either drive or take the Caltrain that runs every 30 minutes or so from Mountain View and takes 90 minutes to get to downtown San Fran.

You can always catch the BART in Millbrae to head up to SFO, good parking at the train station and only a 45 minute ride up. Much better than trying to find and pay for parking in SF.

Also, Uber is very big out here, but they can't pick you up at the airport in SJC at least, so be aware of that.

Areas in the South Bay for restaurants and such: Santana Row in SJ, Castro St. in Mountain View, and up in downtown Palo Alto on University Ave right near Stanford. Downtown San Carlos has some good stuff also.
