Sounds like there is some mutual interest here. He played in 4 games at MSU this year and will still have 4 years of eligibility left. Coming out of HS: On3 had Leavitt ranked No. 7 among QBs and No. 76 among all players nationally. 247 had him as a 4-star, No. 17 QB, and Rivals had him 3-stars, No. 29. That's quite a range. Here's his senior year Hudl highlights.

I think this would be a great backfill for missing on QB last year. But I would also like to see us go after an immediate impact guy too.

He had a decent 7 yard run and a TD pass vs us in limited time...not sure this is a move the needle type player that Rhule would look for.

Throw him at the wall

Maybe he sticks

Rather have someone more experienced but I would take him.
This would be the 2nd QB from the portal. We need someone who has some P5 experience under their belt and some decent numbers for next year.

The trouble with the portal is that usually players are transferring due to lack of playing time and another player ahead of them on the roster. So... what you are getting are guys who were not good enough to beat out the starter. What you look for then is a guy who was beaten out by a really good starter who could start anywhere for anyone. Or you find a kid who was a good starter at a school in a non P5 conference and who was overlooked coming out of high school by P5 programs. There are a few out there who fit that profile.

But ... we really, really suck as a program right now in terms of national perception. And there is hardly anything that would cause a quality QB to decide to come here based on the reputation of our offensive coaches. That perception would not have been so negative and would instead have been very positive and with a lot of hype had Rhule not crapped out a turd of an offense this season. What a monumentally wasted opportunity this year was. Rhule really better be good at "developing" programs over the long haul because he sure as hell impressed no major national recruits with the team he put on the field this year.

We gonna have to pay....

Well some players also transfer because of coaching changes or conference realignment. Yes we will have to pay for a big time QB but so would every other team. The advantage Nebraska has this year is the existing QB roster doesn't pose a lot of competition for the starting job. If, however, a QB transfer chooses to go to another big name school that is highly ranked, there's likely to be a lot of QB competition already on that roster. So you can look at the situation in different ways.

only someone who cannot be objective would count the maryland loss, in which he played 2 series and left the game tied 0-0 and Nebraska having the ball, against Haarberg.
Did he start the game, that's usually how it works. I don't care either way.

99% of the time portal evaluation isn't any easier. Sure, if you get Jalen Hurts it is. But figuring out if the backup at Texas or USC still has potential or is a bust is tough. I think it sometimes gets harder too, if you hadn't evaluated the guy in high school.

Look how many guys will be transferring the day it opens, and coaches weren't allowed to have contact. This is where Rhule being in the NFL, along with quite a few of his staff members, becomes an issue for this year.

You're right on all accounts. Money is the only thing that would get a good QB to come to Nebraska. I'm still pissed these coaches wasted this season away.
