Ryker Fyfe

Hopefully he can continue this for the 2nd half and shut 60% of this board up about how bad he is and how Nebraska cant win with him in there. Kid was thrown through the ringer by his OC and was set up to fail in the 2 main games he has played in. Keep it up Ryker.

Nobody will mistake him for a great QB, but he's a lot better than people gave him credit for. Some people were calling him the worst backup QB in the country and thinking any game he started was a guaranteed loss. Great to see him play well and get a win at home on Senior Day.

Agree 100%
Amazing how posters can't handle any criticism of staff but gladly throw players under the bus. Glad ryker had a great game. Riley said he always thought he was a good qb

Good game overall for Ryker, although as the team goes, the 4th quarter was one of those lose momentum type of situations, defense held good except for one play and the offense lost that mojo. Fyfe was pretty steady and helped his team get the win, can't ask for anything better than that!

The game was a possible proof of concept of Nebraska football after Tommy Armstrong. In that scenario, the loss of Westy is as big as the loss of Tommy. Maybe DPE takes a step up.

Will miss Westy big time, but that said it is big opportunities for Key Jr, Mcquitty and hopefully Lewis and one or 2 others.

Thanks for hanging in there in the backup role all this time and being ready when needed. Nice that he got the chance to play this last home game.

Right now you have DPE, Stan, and Reimers as returning guys who have played. Spielman was mentioned as possibly playing right away. Alston? One has to hope that one of the incoming guys has the lights come on pretty early.

A lot of walk ons have done some heavy lifting when they have needed to this year. What a team, all for each other.

“Shouts out to him. He threw a couple of balls up and his receivers made a couple of plays on 50-50 balls, it wasn’t like he was throwing it on a rope or anything like that or a Peyton Manning pass,” said Maryland junior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr.

I don't know if the touchdown pass to Westy could be considered "a rope", but it was damn fine pass. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

One of the Maryland defensive players wasn't very impressed:

Wait, he wasn't impressed with our former walk on, winless starter QB? Huh. That seems odd.

Seriously, tho, Ryker did what he was supposed to do today, and like Husker.Wed says, sounds like sour grapes.

Congrats to RYKER! I just rewatched the game and I hope he sees what I saw on film and gets coached up before Friday. Running backwards and heaving up prayers is not going to cut it and thankfully Maryland didn't capitalize. I know the line was below average on several of those plays, but you need to decide sooner and not run backwards for 15 yards at a 70 degree angle.

No interceptions for six, or even into the red zone, against Iowa and the Huskers win, imho. Assuming that Armstrong can't go.

He reminded me of the Iowa QB. Managed the game, no major mistakes, let your stars win the game for you after getting them the ball. He also ran well when needed.

I agree rrthusker, but there were about a dozen plays where backwards momentum and throwing off the back foot could have, should have, been avoided or dealt with differently.... Just a correctable part of his game that hopefully gets worked on during this short week.

He didn't play near as good as people are making it out. We're damn lucky Maryland is terrible.

Repeat performance from him this Friday and he'll end up with 3 INT's.

I agree with this to an extent. I think so many were expecting a disaster at worst, or just a run heavy approach with low scoring at best, that when we came out and scored and had long drives with a varied offense, people were understandably thrilled and relieved. So some of the praise for Fyfe was inflated, yes.

But assuming he starts against Iowa, our offensive line had better work hard on pass protection this week or we will be in big trouble. Because against Iowa's defense I think we are going to need to pass successfully in order to set up the run. I don't think we will have much success just pounding the ball at them.

Lol... Of course not. There is a reason some of us weren't worried about Ryker playing Maryland. This a-hole should look in the mirror. The 2016 Maryland terps have less interceptions than any other FBS team in the country. They absolutely suck.

Based on what a lot of people were expecting and calling him the worst backup QB in the country, no I don't think the praise for him is inflated. Nobody said he did anything spectacular, but he beat most expectations. He managed the game well and didn't do anything to hurt us. You can't ask for anything more in that situation. I mean seriously, is it that hard for some people to give him a little bit of credit?

I looked at my son at the game and we both agreed that he threw some ducks that he got away with because Maryland sucked so bad.

I said I think "some" of the praise for him was inflated. People saying he played a "great game" I think is a bit of an exaggeration. He played a solid game, a good game, a competent game. He helped us more than he hurt us. And I praised him for that in the thread where I predicted that morning that he would play well. So please don't try and make it seem that I am refusing to give him "a bit of credit" just because I agree with GBRhusker that some of the praise for him has been exaggerated.

And there is a reason for these comments asking for moderation in our analysis of his play. As kaz points out above, because this was a very shitty Maryland team he got away with some passes that a defense like Iowa's will pic off. So there should still be concern as we enter prep for Iowa that our top QB may not play.

I doubt he or the staff watch the film to learn anything. They aren't really coaches, just throw the guys out there without much coaching, terrible game plan and hope for the best.

Our offensive line deserves "credit" for every single "duck" that I saw him throw. Our right side was like a sieve on multiple plays. I really only saw one of those that should have probably been intercepted. No doubt he got away with a few that better DBs would have maybe picked but I've said that just about every game with TA too.

So who is the weak link? Conrad?

I'm not sure what was going on from just watching the game on TV. I'm sure Riley and his staff have already dissected the video. I didn't see if it was guys getting beat on their blocks or if it was confusion on who they were supposed to block. The 3-4 Maryland was running with a Joker could have been causing the problem but man there were times when there were 2 guys rushing running at him as if they were barely touched.
