I'm just pointing out the great work Matt and staff did in just one month. They walk N and have the top class in the West. Man, Iowa just sucks!! RollingLaugh Sick
yep, I agree.

it's nice to have a halftime lead. hopefully he closes out just as strong or stronger going into spring ball.

Wisconsin at 59th? @king_kong_ What happened to your boy Fickell?
I read somewhere that Fickell has a different recruiting philosophy this year (maybe ongoing). True or not, according to what I heard he plans to place the emphasis on getting transfers from the portal more than he recruits high schoolers. So I guess we should look at what transfers in he is getting.

Whether that's good or bad strategy for these changing times, I don't know. I'd think you need a balance but I guess we'll see.

Well, as I've said in another thread it's obviously better to ranked high than not. That's a given. BUT I don't put nearly as much emphasis on such a ranking these days as in the past because of the portal and many recruits not sticking around or being poorly developed over their careers. Also, Frost often had high recruiting rankings in the West but what did it ever get us?

It seems to me that Rhule is off to a good start but as I've said before a new coach was hired I've been burned too many times now. I really hope he is a B1G success but I'll need to see the proof on the field of play before I get too excited this time.

Not bad at all especially considering the limited amount of time this staff has had. Top of the West and only behind the Big 3 in the East. On a side note I'm a bit surprised UM and PSU are ranked as low as they are.
I think these rankings are about as relevant as the newspaper industry

(Not at all a knock on our kids or staff)

Be curious where Purdue is in this list next year.
So just under half of Illinois ‘23 signed recruits were on defensive side. What is your prediction for Purdue’s allocation for 24? More holes to fill on offense or defense at this point?

It may not be better to be more highly ranked. The Rivals formula is that you get points for your best 20 players + bonus points for Rivals 250 players.
Thus if you are like Wisconsin and only offer enough freshman to get 14 players your ranking will be really, really low. However, if you have 14 highly ranked players with an average ranking of 3.21 in their case and then fill that in with a bunch of high ranked portal guys, you are better off than being a Nebraska that has a star ranking of 2.95 (even though we have a higher team ranking because of our 22 recruits) but less spots for people in the portal.

People put way too much stock in the rankings IMO. Period. It's good for entertainment value but it's only a sliver of a bigger picture and cannot take into account other important factors (e.g., development potential, fit to the scheme, stickiness in terms of lasting on the roster, mental attitude, etc.).

That is a tough one. Back 7 needs hit hard for next year and beyond. If the starting DT's from last year come back for a 5th year and no one enters on the dline, they'd have their 3 deep in the dline back. QB is a big question mark next year, but Brady Allen should be really good. Some promising WR's, but you can never have enough in a passing offense. Oline needs depth.
Really, Purdue isn't completely void of Talent, but they need depth and secondary. Maybe a couple studs. Not sure they have that guy next year.

Seems like we go over this plowed ground every year of highly rated or not, what's the big deal, does it matter, etc. Seems to be a justification in many respects. The body of evidence is pretty strong that the NC winners had higher rated recruiting classes. We can talk all around this situation but until someone breaks the mold, that is how it will stand, like it or not.

That would be TCU this year if they can win their next two playoff games..

First in the west is kind of like being the tallest midget. We’re still a midget. Nothing against midgets, but you get the point. We have more 5.5 and 5.6 then I can remember in a very long time. If one of the 4* 6.0 doesn’t make it we’re too 40.

This is completely opposite of what he's stated. He has said numerous times lately that he doesn't love the portal and would rather recruit players that will fit his culture and stay in the system for 3, 4, or 5 years.

That being said, he may need to use the portal a little more this year than others going forward to pick up the slack that Chryst had become complacent on.

There's the negativity! Was missing you in this positive thread.

Absolutely if you want to compete at elite levels you have to recruit at an elite level. It sounds like our class rank is going to get a bump if Lenhardt does in fact sign. When you add in Sims, Juedy and Scott this is an impressive first class in a very short window. Then if you can develop those freshmen you’ve got something. IMO if you want to field teams that compete for BIG championships you probably need to land in the top 15 in the recruiting rankings

I don’t know how true it is, but it seems possible. But I saw a stat that said over the past 4 years Alabama recruited 100 players. Of those 100, 42 have entered the transfer portal. Again, I have not idea if that’s true or not, but based on the numbers in the portal this year it seems not only possible, but plausible. The point being, I’m really not sure what the point of recruiting rankings are anymore. I think in this time of college football it’s likely that 40%-50% of a given class will transfer or wash out without making any meaningful contribution and that’s probably on the conservative end. If we’re being realistic it’s likely less than 60%-70% of a given class will actually stay and contribute for 4-5 years. While it’s fun to watch, recruiting rankings mean very little in the age of the transfer portal.

I would guess though the rankings still have quite a bit of value when you consider that the number of 4 and 5 star kids Bama has left in their 2 deep is still pretty high. They keep recruiting those kind of players and when some very talented kids can’t get on the field they go somewhere they can. IMO that phenomena I imagine might actually level the field a bit for the rest of us. Average star ranking of your entire 3 deep would be an interesting study. I suspect top teams would fair very well in that.

I have a strong suspicion Nebraska will be hauling in top 15 classes in the near future and many of the kids in Rhules program will go on to play pro ball. jmo
