his solution.. re-ignite the walk on program, despite noting 30 seconds later that you can't have 100 walk on's anymore (105 team limit with 85 schollie's for those of you playing along at home).

Tougher yet, walk on quality mirrors recruiting area quality.. thus OSU, Penn State, Maryland, and Rutgers are in places much easier to find walk ons, as the sheer population numbers make it easier for kids to get overlooked.

He goes on to say that UNL can not keep firing solid coaches like Bo and Solich, despite being the guy who most like brought in to fire Riley?!?!?:eek:

He then says you need to catch Michigan and Ohio State and win titles all over the place.. is he going to beat them with Riley.. as he doesn't want to fire coaches?

It sounds like he'll simply make things worse.. he lives in the past and has been running a charity as of late.

Team limits are not 105. You can have as many as you want once school starts. Preferred walk-ons are those who get to come in earlier before school gets going. We have more than 105 right now.

I don't think he was brought in to fire Riley. He was just brought in to let a certain group of people feel like they have someone to talk to and to make everyone feel better. His comments above show he is pretty out of touch with today's college football.
I read the quotes above, just cringed and thought "Oh please just mind the ship and don't touch anything until someone who knows what they are doing can take the wheel."

Can somebody tell Dave our starting center is a walk on. Whoopee

Walk ons are the least of our worries. Geez
Yeah-I don't get why we're talking about walk-ons all of the sudden. Who has suggested in recent years that we've been de-emhpasizing the walk-on program? If this is what he really cares about most, then I'm really glad he isn't getting the permanent job because he's trying to create issues where they don't exist.

I think walk ons do have their part, but it doesn't build the talent, just helps the infusion of higher work ethic than anything.

Pelini must've definitely thought so cause he didn't fill classes and half our depth chart was almost filled with them.

Agree, I get their importance but other than a "Brandon Rigoni" type kid who goes down and blows people up on kickoffs, I would really rather not see a bunch of walk-ons starting.

He ain't firing Riley. Where are you getting this from?
you are kind of new to this stuff.. he was brought in to fire Eichorst and will take down Riley.. or clear the path for the next AD to do so. Riley can still turn it around, but that's on him.. the torches are lit and the angry crowd is gathering outside the castle.

Rimington's just here to keep the donors happy during another mediocre season on the field.

Do fans of other schools give this much scrutiny to interim administrators?

As long as he doesn't propose bringing back the steroids program I think his ideas should be considered.

oh yea.. and 2 of them play in your conf.. tOSU and PSU.. UM fans are more worried about wine pairings...

Watchu talkin bout Willis?
typed to fast... to bump Eichorst out.. my guess is he stays around to see if Riley can save himself, if not a new AD will precede the next coach.. they would be crazy to let an interim hire the next coach.. Penn State did that, and it cost us Bill O'Brien... we did the same thing, bot in an old alum Dave Joyner..

This is the dumbest and most pointless thread I have seen on here for a while.

1. Rimington had nothing to do with firing Eichorst or "bumping him out"
2. Rimington is an interim AD brought in for purely PR purposes and will be gone in a few months so who cares what he thinks?
3. Rimington isn't firing anyone. If Riley is fired before Rimington's tenure is up you can be 100% certain it wasn't his decision.

Ugh

It sounds like he'll simply make things worse.. he lives in the past and has been running a charity as of late.

In fairness to Rimington, you could argue that the athletic department has also been a charity the last several years. Probably given out more $ than the Boomer Esiason Foundation.

He stated firing "solid coaches", not coaches with .500 records. The word solid is open to interpretation but IMO, Riley record does not make him a solid coach at this point and maybe Rimington's opinion too. So if that's the case and he does fire Riley, he really isn't being contradicting here.

Yes it is. It could mean coaches hired by his former coach.
Yes. That word solid is open to interpretation. However, it was never used.

"We have to get some continuity in coaching. Stick with our guy. And not get so quick to drop the hammer on people. Because you know we fired two 9-10 win coaches in the last fifteen - twenty years. You just can't do that and survive. No one wants to coach for you."

Hmmmmmmm...Dave's actual words sound nothing like what the original poster posted.

I was pretty excited about DR coming in as Interim AD....After the quotes from the last few days I really hope they get a full time guy in there that is independent as can be.

Raise your hand if you think the walk-on program holds the key to our resurgence. Anyone? Can I get Allen Iverson over here to say, "Walk ons? We talkin' bout walk-ons?"

The walkon thing is making my head hurt...

Starting Center
Starting Fullback
Starting TE + #2 TE
Reimers and Rahn with significant time at WR (plus a couple of others playing)

Only walkon with significant time on D is Weber...who is an award candidate...hhhmmmmm

Can someone in the media department please update his talking points, PLEASE?

You just don't get it. Listen to the interview and maybe you will understand.

First he said there are two ways to have development. The prime way to do that is always through recruiting. However the other way is through developing walk-ons. Plus, if your walk-ons are better your scholarship players will be pushed to be better.

Second are our walk-ons playing because we placed importance on the walk-on program, they worked their way up in it, we developed those players, and they beat some solid scholarship guys? Or are they playing because we don't have scholarship bodies at those positions or those scholarship bodies were absolute busts? I can tell you what this board has said over the last six months.

I will hold the walk-ons solely accountable for losses from here on out. Makes as much sense as TADDR

There is a reason the leadership felt they needed to bring in a neutral guy (not already in the department) for 60 days. It wasn't to shake hands. I haven't figured out why yet, but I think it will all become clear to us in the near future.

Without spending too much time going through every scenario in my mind, I think it is one of the following:
  • To make recommendations to weed out more of the department staff so a new AD doesn't have to come in as a hatchet man
  • To actually be considered for the permanent job (we used a search firm, and lo and behold, the right guy is here now)
  • To provide a third party review of head coach Mike Riley (same reason as first statement
Maybe something outside of these scenarios, but when something doesn't make sense on the surface, it's usually because there's more to it.

Time will tell.

I think he's just bringing up the walk-on program as a distraction. That approach seems in vogue these days. Now...if he starts advocating leather helmets and berates those new-fangled face mask thingys and the forward pass, THEN it will be time to worry.

Concerning walk-ons, might be some kick back for initially hiring Chris Brasfield, who then didn't talk to high school people.

OP is a Penn St fan, maybe here to enjoy the turmoil.

I'm actually a Penn State guy.. and Iowa will have more guys drafted (and has had far more guys from trenches) drafted as of late. I'm sure many on the board would agree with me on this one. In fact lack of physical line play has led to all of the 30+ point blow outs since you've been in the BIG. The BIG has it's good/bad points.. but it's a LOT more physical than were you guys were playing.

Brasfield has a place, not sure walkon program is the fit.

The 9 walk-ons signed in the 2016 class must've done one heck of a job selling themselves then.

Former Husker Kenny Wilhite signed 11 walk-ons in the 2017 class. I'm sure the extra 2 were due to Kenny talking to high school people. Laughing

I'm glad you possible think the walk-on comments, which is nothing but marching orders talking points from the incest group tradition coalition, might have something to do with hiring someone 29 months. Oh, and he hasn't held that position since March-ish of 2016, but hey - that doesnt matter.

"#50" not with the team on the trip. I wonder if Riley will talk about a lack of support?
Does anyone really think the decision to let him go has not already been made? How can they claim they are reviewing the program while he sits in a hotel collecting checks?
