Maybe it's me, but I thought Riley didn't sound too optimistic. He said we could be good if we could tackle in the open field and we could prevent bid plays. Have these been a problem in practice. He also said we had a chance to be good on offense if we could establish a consistent running game and we made some big plays over 20 yards. Of course, any coach might say those things in advance of a game. "We will win if we make big plays and keep them from making big plays"

It's probably more a symptom of Riley not being a cheerleader. So far he seems pretty direct with his media comments. We'll all have a better handle on how the season will look after BYU and South Alabama.

Its you,,, lol, He has to talk with the media. they are going to ask for concerns or if previous have been addressed. Part of your concern may be how it was reported. The article I read put a positive spin on it.

I initially had the same concerns as the OP when I read this from http://www.deseretnews.com/article/...-to-prepare-for-new-look-Nebraska.html?pg=all
Riley, meanwhile, has concerns about the way his offense matches up with BYU.

“Brigham Young is a diverse defense. I think they blitz from the bleachers, so you’ve got to be sound in how you look at them … and how you develop your running game and how you’re going to block it. You have to not be overburdened with too much stuff, but you have to have enough that challenges the defense. Therein lies our issue here in the next few days deciding what that is … We’ve got to have a good week of preparation to get ready for all that stuff.”

Looking back, I don't think TO ever gave big glowing reviews ahead of a game either. The other opponent was always built up, and things we needed to work on was the focal point.

So I don't think we are hearing anything that different from what we would traditionally hear.

Or he might have legitimate concerns. Could be the honest appraisal of the head coach and not coach speak. We know tackling has been an issue on the field in the past. The running game is minus AA and the o-line has had reported struggles. New D that has given up some long plays in practice. Whether he is not optimistic is an opinion, but he is likely pointing out areas that need genuine improvement. Coaches know their weaknesses better than anyone else.

I would say that's a fair statement for any football team. I thought tackling in the open field and not giving up big plays were just penciled in on every one of those stupid "(Insert car sponsor here) KEYS to victory" bits they do on the broadcast.

They might also be interested in pressuring the quarterback, forcing turnovers, and getting stops on third down.

THAT is the bottom line. You really don't know where you're at until you play other people. We have several of the best DTs maybe in the country. We've got some really good offensive players at skill positions IMO. You just don't know if the inconsistency is because you're bad or if its because your best players are making plays like they're supposed to. IMO it all comes back to those areas where you KNOW you are inexperienced and lack depth and that is at linebacker first and DE second. Bo left us a real problem there. I think Banker has done his best to build depth at both positions but an injury or two could be disastrous there for us and we have Bo to thank for that. SOB shouldn't have gotten his buyout just for the way he encouraged kids to look around.

I heard TO state on MULTIPLE occasions that he really never know what kind of team he had until the season was about over. Riley is just a straightforward honest no BS guy saying you know, we've got things to work on and you never know until you play the games.

im prepared for us to take some lumps this year, but im hopeful for some good things to happen, as well. its hard to know for sure what we'll see more of and i'll bet he feels the same.

That's how it's supposed to be done. Work on you deficiencies, train for the endurance and prepare for your opponent. Hoping for the best is not the sign of a good coach.

This could be a tough game. It's all brand new, so we can't have unrealistic expectations yet. I'm looking to see a team that is prepared, is getting the ball to playmakers and really just getting after it. It's Tommy's team, so as he goes, we go. I like our position coaches, so I think each respective unit will be ready.

Riley has said a number of times that no one puts more pressure on a coach than the coach himself. Maybe he is a little worried. Sometimes we forget head coaches, CEOs, Presidents, etc. have doubts occasionally, they are human like the rest of us. I think Riley is apprehensive like we are (more so), but I think he is still optimistic. That is his nature.

None of us know how the team will play. Pretty sure MR doesn't know either.

Exactly. I'm a pretty optimistic....but right now I think we are just an average team
...but also have the potential to be pretty good. We just have to be patient as well as realistic.

All good coaches will tell you there is always something the team can improve on. For instance, Saban is never happy 100% satisfied with how his team played regardless of the outcome. He will find the one thing the team needs to improve on and focus on that in the press conference.

Right its just what the media writes, I have no idea of our players attitude towards this game.
