This is by Mike Farrell, National Recruiting Director for Rivals.
My biggest question is about where he says, at the end, that Nebraska offered Bielema before Riley. Is that true? I hadn't heard that.
Nebraska is 1-2 and has lost on a last-play Hail Mary to a ranked team and in overtime at Miami after coming back from a 23-point deficit on the road. Its only win is against South Alabama, a team that was established in 2009. Oh, and the Huskers could very well lose to Southern Miss this weekend, a tough opponent even at home that gave Mississippi State all it could handle. So how can a losing team be helping itself in recruiting? Because of coach Mike Riley. Not only is Riley considered one of the most underrated coaches in college football, he's also one of the classiest and a terrific role model for his players.
In this day of loud-mouth coaches spouting off about other teams and players not being held accountable after numerous infractions, accusations and arrests, parents and coaches won't think twice about sending their kids to Lincoln to play for Riley with one condition - the program needs to win. And I think it will. The team showed a lot of heart not only bouncing back from the gut-wrenching loss to BYU but also in the fourth quarter against Miami. And this is a new coach with a new philosophy who is installing many new wrinkles on both sides of the ball.
Nebraska fans may not be thrilled with a 1-2 start and the way the Huskers lost both games, but the conference schedule still beckons in a very, very average Big Ten West (no offense Northwestern and Wisconsin). The staff is loaded with NFL experience and Riley is known for turning three-star high school players into four-star college performers. Ranking 38th in the country and No. 11 in the Big Ten recruiting rankings is nothing to brag about, but with only 15 commitments this class is fifth in the conference in average star ranking and could end up higher. Oh and one more thing, Nebraska could have Bret Bielema coaching right now after the Huskers offered him ahead of Riley. Sometimes a loss is a win off the field too.
