Reds Take Final Two Games of Red-White Series

Lincoln – After being shutout in the series opener, 2-0, the Red squad rallied and won the final two games of the series, 6-2 and 5-3.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Ryan Boldt came through with a two-out hit. The junior from Red Wing, Minn., delivered a RBI triple that scored Jake Meyers for the first run of the game and then Boldt scored on a single by Brady Childs to put the Red team ahead, 2-0.

The White team stormed back in the top of the fourth and tied the game. AJ Johnson started the frame with a triple and scored on a RBI groundout by Steven Reveles. Jake Placzek followed with a triple and scored on a single by Mike Waldron, his fourth RBI of the series.

Meyers untied the game in the home half of the fourth with a RBI single that scored Angelo Altavilla, who started the rally with a one-out single. Holding a 3-2 lead, Ethan Frazier held the Whites scoreless in the top of the fifth.

The Reds scored for the third straight inning in the fifth, tagging on a pair of runs. Boldt and Childs each drove in a run to give the Reds a 5-2 lead.

The White team was able scratch a run across in the top of the sixth, as Placzek led off the frame with a double, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch. They were unable to do any more damage and dropped the rubber match.

Nebraska opens the 2016 season on Feb. 19 in Charleston, S.C., when it plays the first game of a three-game series against the College of Charleston. NU’s home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, March 8, when the Huskers host Northern Colorado at Hawks Field.
