With significant help from Keyshon Johnson and Gebbia we got off to, for the Huskers, an unusually great start. Now we have nothing really in the que or close to it. Lots of potential but none appear to be in much of a hurry. I was hoping that Johnson and Gebbia would assist on getting the 5 star CB or the other 5 Star receiver but neither appear to know what they are going to do. In the meantime, your typical front runners such as Alabama, Ohio State, etc. have pretty much filled out their class and are in the top recruiting positions.

Is this just he way it is going to be? I was hoping with all the California talent and Gebbia and Johnson on board that a few more would have joined them. It we could get the 5 star CB from Calabaras that would start an energentic run for defensive players.

I know this is somewhat similar to a previous post but I got too excited about the influence Gebbia and Johnson were going to have....I think I may have been too optimistic. The players we have; 4 four stars and 3 three stars should do well.

I was afraid Nebraska Football was dead. The previous coaching staff could have been making an effort to land the best possible recruits, but it didn't look that way, it didn't sound that way, and it didn't show in the overall results.

I don't think Ohio State or Alabama get every single one of their top targets. They have to fight to fill out their rosters. Callahan, for all his faults, could talk with recruits and he would fight to get them. I thought Callahan was a special circumstance, a superbowl coach falling within NU's relevance timeline. I'm not thinking that way anymore. I think we still got "it" or enough of "it" to get national level recruits interested in coming here.

Mike Riley didn't hand pick his coaching staff for their recruiting prowess. We just got mostly whoever was at Oregon State good or bad.

I'm not encouraged by Mike Riley or the staff (don't try to read into it that I'm discouraged either). I'm encouraged that a coaching staff that takes recruiting seriously, markets our program, and works to get the recruits, has recruits talking about us again. We won 5 games last year, there should be nobody talking about us.

What do you mean Riley didn't hand pick his staff? That's exactly what he did.

I see a couple half empty people rearing their heads. It's almost like they had to keep quiet when the big commitments came in and finally in a quiet period they rehash why they didn't like Riley as a coaching selection.

You left off "for their recruiting prowess". Was it just one of those bad years for Hank Hughes recruiting wise?

Half empty? I'm encouraged.

I Johnson @ DT and Sichterman (sp?) @ OT could be deciding by end of May. Calvin's decision could come anywhere from two minutes from now til NSD. Also, Cali satellite camp will be huge.

Half empty? I'm encouraged.

They had prowess at Oregon St. They had to. Most wouldn't accomplish 25 percent what Riley did up there.

Do people not understand the fact that we are in the middle of the spring evaluation period?

At least the second time he's claimed we "won 5 games". Very strange

We won the bowl game so 6 wins, no reason for me to refer to just the regular season. So be it.

The point is our record does not look to be affecting our recruiting. It's May, we have until February. The staff is getting players to consider us.

- It is May, so questioning our class right now is definitely over-reacting... 9 months left and a lot of possibilities

- We live in Nebraska so landing the big fish early is almost impossible. If you were a 17-18 year old kid and lived in California, Florida or Texas would you hop on a Nebraska offer if every other school in the country has offered you? They are going to see their options, and make the best decision. The fact is they have a lot of interest, and at this point that is a really good sign. I know I would commit to NU if I got the offer, but NU football is in my blood. It is "not" a way of life elsewhere, the sooner you realize that the better your heart will be!

- All signs point to us doing much better than years past. We have a legit shot at 4-5 5* players. Even under Callahan that never happened? Since rivals started this is the best I have felt about our recruiting. I feel bad for you guys that can't feel good about what is happening, Pelini must of left a dark empty spot in your soul, because it seems the sun will never rise for you folks.

- I have learned a lot over the years, and probably the biggest thing I figured out is. Things are never as good or as bad as you think they are. Nebraska may or may not have a run like they did in the 90's, but I have figured out my complaining and worrying never helps anything so why do it. I suggest you adapt and do the same!

Good luck I feel for you, I was there not to long ago!

We are in the middle of the spring evaluation period which might make it seem like a lot is going on...which a lot is but not in the area of having chances to close kids. With the coaches on the road (along with spring practice and spring break being over) not a lot of kids visiting schools and while they might "bump" into a coach at their own school they aren't spending any real time with them. If a school gets a commit, this time of year, it is usually either from a new offer (often an under the radar recruit) or from a kid who had long planned to make his decision at this time...and in the second scenario, while I wouldn't call it the norm it is not abnormal for a recruit to push back that date until after the evaluation period because they might want to help teammates get noticed (if coaches still feel they have a shot they will visit his school and maybe stumble onto one of his teammates).

GREAT post. i think we will see a lot more running though. Look at how they have the TE Carter involved in the run game at critical times to end the year. We will have receivers running the ball; most any type of screen you can imagine; and lots of designed qb carries and run-pass options. Our coaches have constantly stated it begins with dominant lines on both sides of the ball; why can't some fans retain this information. They also will chuck it long once in a while to keep em honest and burn them when we can. GBR

Although I agree with you the proof is in the pudding. We were screaming run the damn ball most of last season before the staff caught on it was better to get a W than a L BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. That to them was running the damn ball. They don't really want to all that much but came to grips with the fact that Ls don't go down in Lincoln like they may have other places so you had damn well figure out your best option to get a W. With TA that is run so I expect to see a lot more this year but I need to see it before I believe in the commitment.

After TA I expect we will become pass happy like early last season.
