It is so refreshing to see what Mike Riley and his staff are accomplishing on the recruiting front. They are proving a couple of items to be true that most people have either forgot or otherwise become apathetic about.

  • Recruiting is a critical component of being a great coach. It is a talent and a skill set that the elite coaches possess and they embrace that component of the job. In its simplest form, everything that happens on the field is a reflection of coaching because these are the young men you decided to bring on-board and now must teach, develop, and coach up. There is no excuse for poor on the field play other than we must become better coaches, top to bottom. Actually pointing the thumb, not just saying it to save face at a presser.
  • Outside of lack of football population within our 500 mile radius and weather, there is really no other excuse for not being able to recruit elite talent to Nebraska. Recruiting success is a matter of where are you going to put your weight and attention. Are you going to put it on the two challenges or are you instead going to focus your energy and thoughts on all the reasons why an 18 year old kid absolutely should come to NU. Coming from Corvallis, I'm certain these coaches fully recognize and appreciate all of the built-in advantages Nebraska has that so many other D1 institutions would love. More importantly it seems they believe 100% in what they are selling, which anyone in sales knows is a critical key to success and landing deals others would have deemed impossible.
Of course it's early, but it's hard not to get excited about what we are seeing from this staff vs the old staff on both an accountability and pure energy/execution front. Will it translate to the field? We will see, but I'm not going to put a limit on what Riley and his staff are capable of because it seems they are not putting that limit on themselves. GBR.
