Raiola Shouldn’t Survive the Bye Week

at the end of the hour nobody really cares how many worthless masters degrees a message board poster brags about when they prove how misinformed they are with their knowledge. just shut your pie hole and people might be impressed
Good one. Why so angry? I’ve never attacked you. I don’t have a Masters degree but you can call me Dr. 😉

saban wont do nothing. he's content to set back and hope something will magically fix itself
But how can this be with all the 4-5 star OL they have? Also, they have one of the best OL coaches in the country. How can one of the best OL coaches allow this to happen? They must not practice correctly or teach proper technique.

the false starts, the personal fouls

it’s one thing for your position group to be a laughing stock, it’s another to do so while also being so undisciplined you can’t string together 6 plays without committing a penalty

we all know why he was retained. that ship has sailed. time to hire someone who knows what the F he’s doing up front
Suggest the existing O line lacks talent and intelligence. No coach can fix that.

I think they’re smart enough. Most of them are worthy P 5 O linemen but Corcoran is taking arrows by playing tackle. He should be a guard. Defenses are abusing the rules on snap simulation and our guys didn’t handle it well. Scott’s penalty was just stupid nastiness. I can’t say I completely hated the aggression. Poorly timed.

not scott's first personal foul

also committed one after a long gain by Bullock on a WR screen vs LA Tech. equally poorly timed.

it's the coach's job to minimize mental mistakes and to prepare them for shifts/simulated snap counts. michigan and UNI each did the same thing with the same amount of success.

tackles make turnstiles blush

watching alabama makes me feel at home
We were SO spoiled by Milt’s O lines. We had advantages then that I don’t think we’ll ever see again at NU. Coaching continuity and Boyd’s “science” were a tough to compete with.

The cracks are starting to show at Bama. Saban has been losing some recruiting battles. I’m not writing them off yet though.

Are you gonna bench Scott after that play? Reminded me of Dominic Raiola when he was a Husker. He didn’t mind taking a few cheapies.

I would have made it known it was unacceptable the first time

Dom was an all-american. scott is not.

In the postgame, I believe Rhule mentioned that Illinois was barking defensive calls which were confusing our guys on the OL.

How was Raiola’s experience & qualifications worse than Bo Pelini’s when he was hired as our DC? Just curious.
Bo was an up and coming LB coach for the Packers. Highly thought of in the NFL. 9 years experience as a position coach for 3 teams. Raiola was an assistant OL coach for the Bears. For 4 years. Maybe someone thought highly of him?

not an intern but asst OL under one of the most respected NFL OL coaches. His jump was from an asst OL coach where he is coaching to a college OL coach, not a coordinator. His experience isn’t much different than Pelini but didn’t make as big of a jump. DR has much more NFL playing experience than Bo.
The main difference is Pelini was seen as an up and comer. He was moving on to better things. What would Raiola be doing right now if not for his nephew and Frost hiring him?

he was an intern/assistant at NU for 5 years before taking the full-time OL Coach position

he's the OL coach for Ole Miss right now and has never spent a season without at least that title since leaving NU.

guessing once the nepotism retainee is let go he won't be working anywhere in major college football as an OL coach, which would also be telling.
That is the true measure for coaches and players that leave. Where they go and who wants them.

Give Riola credit for turning Benhart around. The guy is playing pretty well now, especially compared to the last three years. S & C folks doing work too.
no, he's not

he's a sieve

was beaten like he stole something all night last night in both the run and pass game

Same player as under Austin?
yes.

when compared to the guy on the other side who consistently grades as a "0.0", he looks serviceable

I would be shocked if he was graded in the top 20 tackles in the B1G.

he's crap. need at least 1 and even 2 additional TEs to help on his side consistently.

Well yeah we aren't going to fire him mid-season, or at all...but the false starts need to stop, Rhule needs to put the pressure on. He will because he's a leader and legit head coach.
Benching is the best way to deal with guys making dumb mental errors, but there isn't enough depth to bench anyone. Grant was benched for fumbling only so long as Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson were healthy. Funny how that works.

Bo jumped from a POSITION coach to COORDINATOR for a P5 program. He had never been a coordinator at any level. DR jumped from an ASST POSITION coach to a POSITION coach at a P5 program. There’s a lot less difference for DR than Bo, IMO. None of us know anything about coaching in the NFL or College and yet we think nothing of moving someone from an analyst position to a position coach. You make me laugh.

There might be some misguided notion that his nephew is gonna pull a Quinn Ewers on Georgia

We probably can’t keep him long enough to find out. I mean, maybe if Dylan wants to transfer after his freshman season…🤷‍♂️ I suppose, under those fantasy land circumstances, you keep him. But let’s be realistic, that’s not gonna happen. Another thing that’s probably not gonna happen is Rhule firing him after this season. He’s gonna get one more year I’d think, to show improvement.

After that, he better hope his nephew wants to transfer…

Exactly. He won't be fired until his nephew has signed with someone else.

The worst possible scenario would be for nephew Raiola to sign with Nebraska, because it would mean we'd be stuck with his OL coaching uncle the entire time he was here, for fear he would transfer away. Who knows, maybe he didn't choose Nebraska because of his uncle.

I have no problem with why Raiola was retained. His nephew was the kind of transcendent recruit that would have made him worth keeping. Not just for his talent, but for the type of talent he would have brought along with him and all the hype surrounding him.

That said, there's zero chance he flips. The kid literally already moved to Georgia for his senior year of high school. That's about as committed as it gets. Barring something unheard of, that's a done deal.

As far as him wanting to transfer at some later date, he may, but it likely won't be to us. He'll have much better options if/when that happens. If he didn't pick us round one when we (hopefully) did everything possible to get him, he's not considering us moving forward.

The Dylan Railoa ship has sailed. And the Donovan Raiola one needs to, as well. But not mid season. That's just silly talk. He'll be one of a few coaching changes made in the off season.

could be the o line just isn't very good and no matter who the coach is it isn't going to get better. the tackles suck shit and should be replaced.
This. DR hasn't had nearly enough time to show if he's good. Give him a couple of seasons with his recruits and then judge him. Greg Austin had that time and shat the bed.

Was this the first game that Illinois did that? If not, it would be interesting to see what effect if any it had on the other teams they played.

It is the biggest weakness 6 years running. Not athletic, with very low football IQ. Little physical or mental toughness. We should count on at least a couple of false starts every game with drive killing results. This unit will single-handedly lose us games this season. Already happened once against Minnesota. Should get better in a couple of years when the dead weight moves on!

At this point I'm beginning to jump on the bandwagon of "Raiola hot seat" crowd.

There are certain things you analyze on film and say "we need better talent, better S&C development", but the mental mistakes....come on

The false starts....always coming at the worst possible times btw. Is there not a ****ing drill you can work on with your O-Line group to ensure they never false start?

Michigan had 0 false starts against us....not sure how many they will have all year or what an average O-Line should expect here....
Imo, Michigan caused some of those false starts and should have been penalized

You know nothing about coaching football
How you talk. Kong may have all kinds of coaching success. The Dragon had a very successful career coaching in the Lingerie League and has landed a good gig in the USWFL. Sometimes you just never know who you post with on the Insiders Board.
