Listened to the HOL show and read Tunnel Talk from a neat little court yard at the inn where we are staying. Of all the cities we have been to on this trip Prague is by far the best. Salzburg is great and it's small enough to manage. Vienna is a city with almost 2 million people and that makes it difficult to negotiate. Someone mentioned they are going to Salzburg and/or Vienna for Christmas. I have a friend who spent Christmas in Salzberg and said it was wonderful. I can see that. Don't get me wrong, Vienna is a wonderful place, but it is also a big city. Prague is very walkable and you can reach all parts of the city very easily by foot or by tram. Prague was part of the Austro Hungarian empire, so once again the Hapsburgs ran the show just like Vienna. You can see the evidence of that everywhere.
We are off to Oldenburg Germany tomorrow. My great grand parents immigrated to Northeast Nebraska from Oldenburg, so I'm doing a little ancestry worship there. If any if you have family from Oldenburg, I will be at one of the Lutheran churches that has been around for 4 hundred years and will be going through the cemetery. If you have family from Oldenburg, maybe your relatives are buried in that cemetery. I would be happy to look for the names and take a photo.
We also went to Slovakia on our way to Prague. You can really see the evidence of communism. They built these apartment houses that had absolutely no architectural features at all. They were about 20 stories high, and just plain concrete boxes. Just like we see in the movies. We had a guide in Prague who was part of the Velvet Revolution when Czekoslovakia broke away from the Soviet Union. He had been jailed a number of times as a dissident. We spent several hours with him after our tour just talking about life under communism. I can't imagine living like that.
