I will start this off like always stating its the first two days of practice with no pads so take it for what its worth.
I will start with non scholarship guys that maybe you haven't heard of that looked good to me.
David Engelhaupt, Tyler Hoppes, Donovan McDonald, Brady Pelzer, Logan Rath,
QB- If Tanner Lee were eligible I think he could give Tommy a run for his money. I think he would be the typical fit for Riley's Oregon State offenses. Think Sean Mannion. Big tall QB, good arm, aint running anywhere. It will be huge having him next year. I think he starts and then the battle begins the next year between Tristan and POB. POB looks better than he did in spring, more confident.
RB Three RB's with different styles. It would be nice to have a clear number one and I think it might end up being Ozigbo because he can do a little of everything but we have three guys that are completely different. You got a third down speedster, a wiggler, and a pounder. But by the end of the year I see Devine running away with it and everyone else fighting for back up reps.
WR. SO DEEP. Even the walk ons looked good. No more needed. Stacked. Side note, Alonzo put on some weight and is a great dude BTW, and if you saw Jordan Westercamp at the mall you would think he was a thespian or soccer player maybe, def not the best WR in the big ten. Classic good guy with great character and work ethic but doesn't look it.
TE. Still don't like this group. ITs Cethan and everyone else. Couple walk ons look better than scholarship guys. Allen and Jurgens were at practice and I think they both could crack the top four.
OL- Love that Gates has finally put on some muscle. He looks good. Him and Farniok both have the frames of guys you see that go high in the NFL draft. Matt is not as far along as Gates was a a freshman as far as Technique is concerned but has more strength at this stage of the game. The starting five also has me comfortable for the first time in many years. Love the G's but C and RT will worry me until the live bullets start.
DL. This is the untapped potential group. Got a lot of great young looking guys and looks to be a big strength in the next few years but they need to grow up and grow up fast. All those young guys have added some muscle and look the part but we will see when the pads get on. Big Alex Davis fan. The season will rest with the development of these young guys.
LB- Tough to asses LB's wo pads. I don't think there is a D. Young in the Fresh group but they like the DL have some young good looking athletes that Bray can mold. Nobody really stands out.
DB's- Like WR's this group is STACKED. And let me tell you we have all heard about Lamar Jackson but wait till you see him in action. WOW. Probably the most explosive athlete on the team already but what I didn't know was how big this kid is. One of the tallest and biggest DB's on the team. He has all the tools to be one of the best CB's we have had in a long time. He's a bit "I'm big time" right now, hopefully the older guys fix that soon. But damn is he a freak. and love the early looks of D. Bootle. Dude is going to be good.
Caleb the punter has a big leg and takes his craft very seriously and will do ok. I think he will struggle a bit pinning guys inside the 20 and with some directional stuff right off the bat but the guy is very talented. Drew Brown looks to have added some leg strength and Zach D. has done a great job holding.
BTW strength and conditioning is much better. It got old seeing guys coming back fat and out of shape during the old regime. It was awesome to see so many guys with new and improved bodies.
Sorry for any grammar issues, don't feel like going back and checking it.
