Portal TE from LSU is N!! Eligible to play this year

Don't care, pumped to have the kid, but this is pretty wild, and kind of hard to believe.

It’s official: there are no current rules for CFB. Players can literally just transfer at any time and be eligible immediately. Can you imagine if Patrick Mahones left the Chiefs on his own during training camp and went and joined the Broncos?
This is just crazy. They have got to figure out some basic NIL/transfer rules…

Life is full of loopholes. He took advantage of it. Crazy how under the radar this was for how highly touted he was.

The kid literally left school - made his own contacts to find a better fit and switched schools to be a part of the team. None of this is easy vs putting your name in the portal and having everyone and their dog flying you around to wine and dine you to join. I admire his effort and ingenuity and most of all his blocking ability.

This could help any team, it could also bite them in the ass.

Look no farther than Gebbia. Kid thinks he should be the starter after fall ball, doesn't get the top job and the next week shows up at some new school eligible to play right away. KO/Punt returner, WR, TE, etc., are positions that can be learned on a preliminary basis very quickly.

Us fans will be all for it, until it bites us.

Don't see any downside. If he plays, it's all upside. If he leaves we're no worse off than before he arrived.

seems to me things are getting quite a bit simpler and more straight forward these days
It’s always easier to justify when the positives go our way. Have a kid leave or someone come poach a player, then let’s see if you feel the same way. Right now, this team seems really tight and all in. It also seemed like no one, including the coaches were sure about his status at first.

No, everything is just easier when there are no rules.

It would be a breath of fresh air to see one of our players leave and do well instead of being glued to a bench somewhere.

We had a LB poached last year by the national champs. So what. We should be poaching too.

It has happened already to us, we don’t need to wait and see. It suck’s when it happens to us. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody that we would feel that way. Not sure what your point is…

It's a joke at this point. I mean... Gundy was boasting the other day that he was laying down the law at Okie State-- not exactly the big time-- telling players "OK, now that the season is starting, there will be no more requests for more money. That stuff can start again once the season is over."

Wow.

Yeah, and that won't last. Soon their will be agents or consultants hitting up kids on every campus. Offering to handle the non-portal transfer process from "A to Z" for a reasonable fee or percentage of future NIL (whatever is greater).

Two thoughts: is there a sophomore rb that started a game last year that might interested in starting at a Big 10 school, like say Nebraska?

2nd: I look forward to the 30 for 30 in 15 years where they talk about our playoff run this year and then tell the backstory on Raiola's flip, Cooper leaving and quickly landing Butler, this TE....

This is the SAME reaction EVERY fan base would have. "We'' aren't any different, get off your high horse, just once. You are nothing if not consistent with your jabs at the program with ANY chance you get.

Remind me who we lost like this kid from LSU? Also, who came poaching our kids with money offers like some schools are saying?

LSU has known for several weeks that he was gone from LSU. It's quite a bit different even than Gebbia who bailed out after school had started. Frost was asleep at the wheel on that deal. Say what you want about Gebbia, he would have probably won us some games when AMart went down with his injuries.

I'm not sure LSU is all that worried about a sophomore who played sparingly last year. They're loaded.

Not entirely true, every school has a late registration period, with a late registration fee. UNL’s started August 26th and ends on September 3rd, with $100 late fee. If this kid would have waited until next week he wouldn’t have been able to enroll at Nebraska. So it’s not completely the Wild Wild West yet.

The fans that still want college players tied to some weird ball and chain that they can't leave is so odd to me.

You get one chance at all of this and Jimmy Super Fan wants all these players to be locked up for 4 years at a school in hope that in year 5 they get to play.

I doubt anyone wants these kids to be locked down as you describe. There is a balance that can be had.

But why?
Why should they not be able to leave?

No one can answer that question with a good answer. I totally get it from a fan point of view and from a coaching point of view but that is really not relevant.

So why should a player not be able to move freely? What about a normal student? Should they be locked down too?

Because no other sports league functions this way. These kids want to be paid. They want to be professionals. Professionals operate on contracts. They don’t get to take a bag and leave right away. That’s why. They can’t have it both ways. Want to leave and transfer like a normal student? Ok, give up the money and scholarships that normal students don’t get. Also go through the normal admissions process that many athletes would never make it through if they couldn’t contribute athletically.

I'm not against kids being able to leave....and my concerns about the subject have less than zero to do with my favorite team or other fans.

I want everyone to succeed and live their best life, even people I disagree with...the world functions a LOT better the more successful people are...better money management, better family units, less crime, etc etc etc...

When you make it so easy to quit something so important at such a young age, they will. Can you honestly say you think that leads to better adulting later in life, or worse? I know what the answer is.

So let kids decide where they want to go to college, then give them a do-over if they have second thoughts, eligible to play immediately....but on the second transfer, you sit for a year, no exceptions unless you move up or down a level....and you have 5 years to play 4..no more 6th year Seniors no exceptions.

That would be my proposal...and if it could be studied and tracked for the next 20 years, and do it honestly, the kids who didn't quit and transferred less, will be leading better lives by a wide margin.

I guess we look at quitting differently.

Why is it "quitting" when the season is over and you want to see if there is a better chance for you out there?

Now, we do have about 100 years of data that shows how things go when players can't leave. So I am not sure if we really need a study on it, we have one. What we need is a study of kids being able to transfer freely for 20 years so that we can study them.

Should you get only one do-over in your job/career? Marriage? Home buying? Car buying? Friendships?

I have taught in 4 different schools in my career, should I have had to stay at my second school forever? Can coaches leave to take new jobs without sitting out?

By the way, I don't think you are wrong with what you say, I just have yet to hear what I think is a good argument as to why they should not be allowed to transfer.

What does it matter how other sports function?

Their NIL deals are their business. When they leave they might not be getting the money still, or maybe some are still paid out but either way, why is that in issue?

You say they can't have it both ways but they can and they do.

Even in the pros, you can sign one year contacts over and over and leave each season for a better offer. Is that wrong?

...but under my proposal they can transfer. Just not unlimited with no consequences...and we don't have the data because it's a recent development that kids can come and go, and are doing it.

You are also comparing adults and tbeir careers to kids. Apples to oranges.

In the immortal words of one of the smartest women ever ".....young people are stupid...."
