With just over 3 weeks until National Signing Day, there's not much time left to flip recruits so you have to think Riley is either on the phone setting up interviews right now with his top 5 guys already lined up or has already conducted a few of them. With that in mind, what do you think the Nebraska defense needs from its next DC going forward?

Gotta get a big name that can coach and get recruits, but we need someone who will keep some of the assistants we have right now. This is asking for a lot, but it is where we are at.

the best damn guy you can find. dont care where he comes from or who he played for. get a proven, successful guy. shell out whatever it takes. for us to regain the status that we all think we should be at, we have to play great, not good, defense.

Let's be honest... just put another option of Dave Aranda. I bet that would win out!

I expect Parella, Bray and DW to be retained.

Bray isn't going to be a hot shot LB coach forever. I would expect his eye to turn towards DC positions rather shortly.

Another proven recruiter in the BIG footprint would be great.
Wilcox at Wisconsin (40)
Chris Partridge at Michigan (36)

Can Partridge run a defense? Honestly don't know but he is the ST Coach and linebackers coach at Mich and he has D line coaching experience we may be able to steal him away and pay him as a coordinator
He has recruiting chops and ties to east coast (New Jersey)

I want NU to dominate the division and also have guys on staff who are proven commodities within the conference. I think that it would lend itself to a run of success for Riley. I think that for the Coordinator position it has to be a household name. Is anyone else curious about the timing of all this? Why now and if Banker didn't make the grade why not can both Read and Banker at the same time?

Whatever he does, I really hope Riley gets someone east of the Mississippi River. Whether he is an NFL assistant LB/DL coach, a former Husker or a Jeremy Pruitt kind of coach, we need a difference-making, program-changing hire.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I would much rather have a DC who is a field tactician and can't recruit over one who can recruit but sucks with playcalling/strategy/adjustments/motivation. Just my two cents.

I don't understand how so many people feel Bray is a hot shot. Our LBs, along with our DEs, were BY FAR the weakest part of our team. He needs to step up his game just to stay employed.

I think there's a vast disconnect between how fans feel about coaches and how coaches feel about other coaches.

We've disparaged Tim Beck to within an inch of his life, and yet all the guy does is continue to work for some of the best staffs out there.

I'm not defending Beck's work here, but the coaching profession is 99% retreads finding new homes. Its not like if Beck or Bray are duds here, they'll be out selling insurance (Elmo would be an extreme example of this). Some other coach is going to say "he can do XYZ, and that's what my staff needs, and I can probably cover his faults with this other guy's strengths over here".

Its my impression from the few people I know who have any sort of in with the program that Bray is generally considered an up and coming guy. Some of the more extreme think we might have to make a pretty big move to keep him in the fold in the near-ish term. Edit: That might mean a title, it might mean more money.

We had a LB room with 4 guys in it that he turned into a passable group pretty much immediately. Lot of athletes coming in, which should help on-field production. That'll catch a few HC eyes.

It amazed me how adept the Clemson players were at the evaluation of things pre-play; on the field > that is an ingrained system and great coaching. I would look for this; and as the poll indicated, someone with great recruiting ties to an area ( we can send someone with him).

I'll go out on a limb and say this guy only sniffs jobs because of his recruiting connections in Texas.

Venables and Aranda aren't coming here. Riley has not gone after these kinds of hires for his staff at NU.

let's see who he goes after. he's come to the realization that his buddies aren't good enough. hopefully, the administration knows they have to fork over some cash to get the best of the best and riley goes and gets him.
