OWH is reporting

not worried about his recruiting chops, can he coach. We have a great db recruiter already. Of course if he can recruit its a double bonus.

63 years old.,.....Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Can he recruit

He is right about Riley's age it would appear. He had at least one defense ranked as the the best defense in the nation while at K-State from '02-'05. He has always been pretty highly regarded, from what I remember.

Coaching staff at ND is on a really short leash. NU could offer him a few years security he isn't getting at ND. No idea who he is but I'd think that would appeal to anyone.

I like Bullock's age more because I assume that translates into an ability to relate to recruits better, but Huskerfan1414 raises a good point that we already have a good DB recruiter on staff. So, if he is an upgrade over Bullocks in terms of coaching, I guess it sounds fine? I'm like warm at best. Not that anyone asked me.

Seems like a knowledgeable man and has some great experience but last season ND pass defense and defense was terrible.

Currently he is not a coach at Notre Dame http://www.scout.com/college/notre-dame/story/1518263-elliott-reassigned-on-staff.

On the surface it doesn't bode well that someone would step down from on-field coaching.

Elliott proved critical in the development of Notre Dame's inexperienced secondary in 2012. The Irish ranked among the top 20 Football Bowl Subdivision schools in the following pass defense categories: fewest passing yards per completion (9.95, second), fewest touchdown passes (11, tie-sixth), pass efficiency defense (111.36, 16th), interceptions (16, tie-20th), fewest passing yards per attempt (5.98, 13th) interception percentage (3.69, 24th) and pass defense (199.77, 25th).

In 2013 Notre Dame ranked 15th in the FBS in fewest passing yards allowed per game (198.2), 16th in passing yards allowed per completion (10.73) and 17th in passing yards allowed per attempt (6.31).

Elliott has spent 32 of his 36 seasons coaching defense, primarily as a defensive backs coach or defensive coordinator. He served as defensive coordinator for a combined 11 seasons at San Diego State University, Kansas State University, the University of Iowa and Ball State University.
In 2014, he was the 7th best recruiter on the ND staff...

He has landed one 5* player, six 4* players, two 3*'s and three 2*'s so maybe he isn't horrible at recruiting...

I am having mixed feelings on him, but probably because he is an old white guy lol :D

IMO if a guy can't recruit he doesn't belong here. We pay a relatively good wage and need people who are equally good at both.

But...He took the less than stellar talent at K-State, and had the best defense in the nation. Give me a guy that can develop talent over a recruiter every time. You may have noticed what a team that has coaches that can develop talent did to us over the Thanksgiving holiday.

I get some of that but recruiting is paramount

Uh....no it's not. Getting a coach that can develop talent is paramount. We saw what happens when we have a great recruiting staff that can't coach. It's called the Callahan era. Ideally, having a recruiter and a talent developer is what any head coach is looking for, but look at what Ron Brown did with pretty marginal talent.

IMHO, if Nebraska wants to win the West, get to the B1G Championship Game and the College Football Playoff, it has to get very serious about defense. The 3-4 changeup I think is a good starting point. I really do. Granted, you have to have a good offense to win but I really believe Riley and Langsdorf are going to surprise the hell out of our fans next season with that side of the ball.

It would make more sense to me if the next assistant was young, energetic, gets along with the players, develops and is a proven recruiter because that's what kids today respond the most to. And in case anybody didn't notice, Riley has been hiring these kinds of coaches as of late. If Riley and Diaco think Bob Elliot is the man for the job and is the right fit, though, I can dig it.

Basically the reason I'm luke warm at best about him too.

We already had an older coach who bounced all over in Elmassian. I'd rather they hire Bullocks who might stick around for a while and FINALLY have a secondary coach who will be here for more than 2 years..

Any of these numbers look familiar to anyone?

13 - 49
9 - 38
21 - 45
27 - 25

Those were the scores against K-State with Bob Elliott as their DC in '02 - '05. We finally won in '05. The guy took a 2-star player from Salina, KS named Terence Newman to the Jim Thorpe and Big 12 DPOY winner.

Edit - Our fans have become Star Gazers...again (see Callahan era), which makes sense that we want more talent in Lincoln. But we need coaches that can develop that talent. I would suspect Elliot would improve all positions with his experience coaching all positions.

I'm N on Elliott if Riley and Diaco want him here. He certainly brings a wealth of experience and success with him.

"Elliott was in charge of Notre Dame's safeties from 2012-13 while new Husker defensive coordinator Bob Diaco ran the Irish defense" - from LJS

So basically, Diaco is trying to replicate the success he had in 2012 with the #2 ranked defense. I don't see how someone can find a lot of fault in that.

Sorry that bringing up laws hurts your feelings. I was also attempting to be humorous but someone hasn't had their coffee yet.

If it duplicates a Callahan defense I find fault. Wasn't Elmiasson the guy our D.C. had success with at Wisconsin? That's what I am reminded of.

The coach needs to be good at both. The logic behind using what Iowa did to us this year is flawed. You may have noticed what a team that has coaches that can recruit did to us the week after we played Wiscy.

Those lopsided losses to kstate came when we had a coaching staff full of old (mostly white) guys that could "develop talent", but couldn't recruit it. Is it a coincidence that when Callahan players were on the roster, Nebraska became a more competitive team? YOU NEED TO BE GREAT AT RECRUITING!

I don't think it's a terrible idea to bring in a guy with that much experience creating a proven product with experience in what Diaco wants out of his defense back there when your entire defense staff is relatively young and has no idea what DC wants.

Realize it's a If, but if we played Iowa a month sooner when we were healthy at QB we wouldn't be bringing this up.

Iowa just turned the corner near the end of the season but we hardly had a mobile QB or backup realize our Defense didn't show up but a month sooner and this game isn't a blow out loss and more likely a close win.
