Overused term "athlete"

I would like someone in the media to explain the use of the term of "athlete" as it relates to CFB. I have heard that term often today and in particular to the TN/FL game, Alabama, notre dame game, etc.

The announcers are just amazed how these "athletes" aren't making the plays they should. How "insert team name" has the athletes and should be beating the other team. And by deductive reasoning one would have to assume they don't believe the other team has "athletes".

I have a pretty good idea of what they're referring to. Good news is a good football player is made up of more than being an "athlete" and I would love for the talking mouthpieces to figure that out and quit using the damn term as a disparaging remark.
