I'm currently stuck in the Apple eco system due to music recording software, but considering a break out of that jail.

Still looking at the Macbook (so light and portable but $$$$), new Macbook Pro is a non starter, that is a heavy expensive turd if you ask me.

Then you got some cool ultra books.. Dell XPS is a pricey but neat one, Asus Zen books, I hear bad things about HP, maybe an Acer is worth looking at if I want to go cheap. Lenovo?

Or get one of those massive 17.3 inch gaming laptops instead?

Curious what others are looking at getting.

If a Macbook pro is too heavy for you, not sure why you would consider a 17.3 gaming laptop in the first place.

Surface Book is a quality product all around. You'll pay a bit for it, but you're used to that already being an Apple user. MS is putting Apple in the rear view mirror, with regards to innovation lately.

Yeah, when I compare the Apple prices to the gaming machines it seems like a sin for Apple to charge that much.

I did try a gaming desktop, but the fan noise was horrible, and within a week I was having audio driver issues, and ended up returning it.

They don't really make a system that I want to be honest. An ultra book running Mac OS, with a 1060 nvidia graphics card for a thousand dollars. :)

My son has custom built some monster PC's for others that were designed for specific uses, gameing, professional sound, etc. You can put in the best audio or graphics cards you want. You should save some money but even if you dont you have a powerful machine built with the best stuff.

I build custom boxes for a living. Unless I was in school and needed to take it to class (or on the road for business) I wouldn't buy a laptop. Desktops are so much easier to maintenance, repair, upgrade. With a laptop you are pretty much stuck with what you started with. Now, if you feel comfortable you could take it apart and possibly add ram/SSD/HDD. If not, you could pay someone like me.

I wouldn't get an Apple, but I'm a Windows guy. If you have to get a laptop, I'd get a professional/enterprise models. You pay the extra price and they are built a lot better. Of course, they start to become obsolete after three years so YMMV.

Didn't mean to imply people get one every year.

I was just curious what other people were looking at getting if they were in the market for a new machine.

Ultra book, gaming laptop, desktop etc.

I guess I've narrowed what I'm looking at to the $800-1400 ultra book market.

Dell XPS 13 ultra book
Asus Zenbook
Acer Aspire S5
Apple Macbook
Lenovo Yoga something

What appeals to me is the small light and portable form factor. To be able to just pick it up and go anywhere.

I am surprised people are still building custom boxes. Cases with windows and lights and water cooling seems so year 2000.. :)

I recently picked up a HP Envy 17 inch. 1TB HD, 16GB RAM, I7 processor and NVIDIA graphics. Paid $750 at Costco. Not a high end machine but has lots of horsepower for the money.

Recently picked up the Dell 7275 - Dubbed as the surface killer by Dell. Love it. Use it everyday as a desktop with a docking station. Powerful, Lightweight, portable, touch screen if your interested in that, and I paid a little bit extra to get the absolutely beautiful 4K Screen. Battery life is lower due to the screen but you can adjust the brightness which helps. Great Laptop and hopefully I can get 4 years out of it.

Kiddie gamers are not the only market. There are professionals that demand workstations that the average person would never consider building. It's not just desktops that sales have fallen, but all computers as smartphones and tablets have taken away marketshare.

I've never recommended water cooling for novices. I'll do whatever the customer wants, but windows and lights give no functionality. I value quiet, performance and reliability.

Just bought a new desktop this year as my old one was getting pretty dated. I was looking at the HP specter for laptops though they look pretty nice but currently just using a chromebook which is good enough for now. Might upgrade next year.
