OT: Union Omaha announces plans for downtown stadium

Bucks the trend of teams moving out to the basic b burbs. Arlington Cowboys, Arlington Bears, Inglewood Rams, Inglewood Chargers. Santa Clara 49ers...

This is part of the Abbott Drive development? Interesting to see how that all plays out.

"Alliance Sports announced its plans for an innovative, state-of-the-art soccer stadium for Union Omaha. Positioned as the centerpiece of an extensive $300 million, 18-acre mixed-use project along Abbott Drive, the construction of the stadium with hard cost of $60 million is poised to start construction in the Fall of 2024, with doors opening to the public in the Spring of 2026. This strategic initiative not only aims to invigorate economic growth but also contributes to the dynamic evolution of downtown Omaha. Additionally, the project is actively pursuing legislation inclusion in the Sports Arena Facility Financing Assistance Act, anticipating a cumulative support of $25 million for the stadium project over 20 years."

I'm not a Soccer person at all but I cannot deny the popularity of the sport and it's growth... looks like a nice spot for the place and makes good use of the area sharing parking with the baseball field and such... kind of neat the way you'll come into Omaha from the airport and seeing those 2 facilities and whatever the Quest center is called now...

It's been a long time since I've been to that area... have they made further progress in the industrial area to the North to clean that up? I know there was some reno's going before I moved but there was quite a few buildings with busted out windows and it looked trashed out...

I know people say soccer is growing in popularity, and I assume that’s at least somewhat accurate, but I’ll shocked and stunned if Omaha Union is financially successful. This whole thing looks like a huge money pit that will likely never produce much revenue. Hope I’m wrong cause it looks like they’re going forward with it…

is it a pro soccer team?

i know soccer is popular in Columbus.

Full disclosure, not a fan. Big question I have, where will people park? Sharing with CHI and The Chuck? They say 20 scheduled matches for the Owls, that’s 20 dates that other events may not be able to be accommodated due to potential lack of parking around CHI. Walk from downtown ? Have fun with that!

I honestly don't know about parking... do those lots all fill up regularly? from an outsider it seemed doable but I've not lived back home since 2017 so I have no clue

How many home soccer games will there be?
What time of the year do thy play?
Better be after the CWS are played.
Will benefit high school Championships.
I do not want to pay taxes on this facility that I’ll never step foot in if it is just for soccer..
