OT: Now my water is off.

Sincerely curious.... what would you define as the center or a centrist political view at this point in time? What current politician represents the center?
To be clear, no sarcasm or rancor intended... as I believe message boards are Ill advised places to talk politics. As tone is difficult to convey
The problem is there really is no longer a center or a middle. Depending on the topic, people can be closer to center but in reality it’s still right or left. Every liberal you speak to will tell you that Donald Trump and anyone who voted for Donald Trump is a racist and fascist and white supremacist. Any conservative will tell you that Joe Biden and anyone who voted for him is a left wing nut job, Hate monger and a socialist.
As the ideas ideology of each party veer further away from center it becomes more and more difficult to find common ground.

The word unity is a joke in this country, because the simple fact is compromise now means you change your view to my view. If you don’t think like me then you’re wrong I’m right and the only way you’ll ever be right is if you start to think like me.

That’s my view from 30,000 feet

I hear you. Guess I get a little frustrated because I feel like a moderate human I like pols like sasse, Romney, klobachar, .... but there is no safe haven for moderation. Just name calling and gamesmanship

This is a good question but I don't think the answer is difficult. 99% of the population is in the middle.

1% are the loons that started the sovereign nation of CHAZ and stormed the capital.

That is is, everyone else is normal and moderate.

Both parties have moved right in the last quarter century, yes, there is a faction of the Democratic Party that is pretty left, but they are pushed to the side for the most part to keep a large enough base. The question is does the Republican Party step back from their embrace of the far right of persistent culture wars and identity politics (although both sides are guilty of this).

Good heavens. You are off your rocker. Far right culture war? Last time I checked it was the Democrat coalition members tearing down statues and disowning our founding fathers. Hell they've attacked the legacy of Booker T. Washington, one of the greatest black men in our history. Abe Lincoln is a racist according to many in the Democrat coalition. You're nuts.

I state both sides are guilty, you scream what about crap. Villainization of black athletes for their opinions, Muslim bans and attacks on immigrants just to name a few. But sure, both sides use culture wars for their bases, but the pull right of the Democratic Party hasn’t been a bad thing.

I don't know if Lincoln was a racist, but forgotten history is his plan to return freed slaves to Africa. He believed there would be no easy way incorporate freed slaves in a post Civil War America, and he gave serious consideration to sending them back to Africa. I don't understand why there can't be an honest conversation about historical figures. For example, Jefferson was an incredibly important person in American history. His contribution should be taught and celebrated, I think, but why can't we also discuss the fact that he owned humans? Why must we take sides? As I see it, the right wants us to conveniently overlook or omit the ugly bits of our history, while the left wants too much of a focus on those ugly bits.

Boxes, that sucks. Sorry to hear it.

I know comment won’t help you in the moment and I don’t mean it to be a dog at you specifically, but hopefully some others here. People, store water in your homes. Buy some 5 gallon water containers on Amazon and fill them up. Snow storms, tornadoes, floods, etc can know out the water supply. You need to keep some water in hand.

I had just bought some containers and filled them up and boasted about them to my friends (I pretend to play prepper to them). They asked why I would store water and one guy piped up and said his wife and several kids all got a horrible case of the flu. All of them puking and pooping nonstop. Utility company knocks on the door and says they’re cutting water for an hour. An hour turns into 4 hours and they accidentally knocked the power out. Shit just happens. Keep water in hand. Thankfully Boxes has power and snow to melt. Otherwise he’d be screwed.

Bathtubs work really good also to keep water for toilet flushing. When you see trouble coming fill up the tub.

You can get something called a water BOB that sits in your tub. You fill it when in the tub and it keeps the water from getting stuff in Pretty good thing to have around.

I apologize to boxes for my part in hijacking this thread. I hope your power and water are back and life is returning to a pandemic normal.

I’ll try to make this my last post on this subject.

the problem isn’t having a discussion about tough issues. I will discuss them with anyone anytime. The problem is that if my opinion differs from yours, then I’m just wrong. I will be wrong until I agree with you.

Using the Lincoln comments above as an example. The left wants to use 2021 standards and tie them to 1860. Similarly back to Washington and Jefferson what was common and accepted in 1765 clearly isn’t acceptable today. But last time I checked I can’t go back and change what Lincoln thought was an appropriate plan or why Jefferson and Washington owned slaves. But in today’s world, if I say whatever, there isn’t anything I can do about Jefferson owning slaves I am labeled as someone who wants to overlook the treatment of black Americans or labeled a racist.

The fact is, I don’t overlook the mistreatment of blacks 300 years ago, 60 years ago or 60 seconds ago. I can only do what I can do today and going forward. I can look at the past and learn from it, go forward and be fine. That doesn’t mean I am overlooking the bigger issue, I just want to change the future not futilely attempt to change the past.

70 years ago companies openly discriminated against women. It was commonly believed that they should be home with the kids, ironing and baking and have dinner on the table when the man came home from work. We all know that is wrong, so why aren’t women protesting the companies that wouldn’t allow them to work? Why aren’t we looting this companies? And stalking the ownership of these companies.

As I said before we can’t use all the knowledge and experiences learned from the la st 300 years and say the people from 1760 shouldn’t have done the things they did back then. Sooooo Let’s change the name of the school with their name on it to some more recent hero. The sad thing is that in 60 years we many well find out the new hero’s name on the building or statue will need to be changed because he or she will be found to have done something the youth of 2180 totally disapprove of and can’t believe a building was named or a statue erected for this person.

Agree some, disagree some. Agree that we can't project the values of today onto generations past and expect a fair and reasonable outcome. Agree there is no such thing as an infallible person. If perfection is the only acceptable standard then we should just give up on celebrating pivotal historical figures. Agree that some people today are looking for nonexistent meaning in the mundane to manufacture outrage. Imagine a future in which our current moment is roundly criticized for eating meat. Future generations will shake their heads in horrified disgust. This is my made-up example of future outrage, but seems real enough.

Disagree that it's as simple as saying "that's just the way people lived back then." We are still living the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, red lining, Japanese internment, lynchings, genocide and so on. While I agree that it's folly to punish people for the actions of past generations, I disagree that we as a society should behave as though all mistakes are buried in the past. The past is present. Every one of us celebrates or commemorates some event from the past, the legacy of which we believe is important to our present. More than most countries, the U.S. is a nation of immigrants, which means we share a common experience, yet not all experiences are equal.

History celebrates the winners. The losers hear a different story, handed down through the generations. It's understandable that some people have conflicting feelings about celebrated historical figures and momentous events. To a large extent what we are seeing now is a movement for a more inclusive telling of our history, and that means we're going to disagree on who is a hero and who is not. At the very least it's worth a conversation. By the way, we are far from the only nation having to reckon with these issues.

It was the 74F on Sunday. Winter (for me) is over. Friday was my first day of work this past week. I wore pants for the first time in over a year, first time ever at my current employer. A co-worker upon seeing me yelled out, "Boxes is wearing pants!" LOL

If you’ve been in a drought for 2 years and get 1 day of rain does that mean the drought is over? Of course not, trying to use 3-4 days to discredit clear evidence of rising average temperatures globally, including sea temps and loss of polar ice just makes you look silly.
