If you agree to be a mule, some cartels will pay for your trip down to Mexico. I hear the ride back is less than pleasant, though.

As an FYI- if you and your wife are trying to conceive or she is pregnant don't go until 2017. The whole Zika thing is scary for pregnant women.

That being said, Moon Palace is great (very large). The Royal Playa del Carmen is smaller and also very nice. Highly suggest both spots.

Wherever you decide, do research on tripadvisor. You will see real pictures of the resorts, which is helpful and a general feel of what the resort is about. But take the negative comments with a grain of salt. The nicest places I've ever stayed at had some negative comments. Some people can't be pleased.

Sandos playacar beach resort. Make sure to spend the extra for guaranteed ocean view room. Totally worth it. Just looked at going back there last week and I think 2 people airfare and everything was right around $2400 for both people. It cost me quite a bit more than that 8 years ago.

Hard Rock Resort - Riviera Maya. We had an ocean view room with a terrace. The terrace was awesome. We really enjoyed our time there.

Don't book a trip to Cancun in the Middle of June

My wife and I went there during this time... not worth the $2,800. Please make note of this, also came back with Salmonella. We stayed at Now Jade,Riviera just so you know where not to go

Booked our honeymoon there and stayed at a place called El Dorado Casitas Royale, in a swim up suite. It's in the Riviera Maya. Had a blast. Website has a lot of good deals as of last month.

Stayed at the Now Jade last year and loved it. Stayed at the Now Sapphire and didn't like it. They are hit and miss. Both in Riviera Maya.

Seems everyone is locked in on a Playa Del Carmen destination. I don't disagree though Puerto Vallarta can be nice as well.

My only advice is to not short cut on an all inclusive spot. The cheaper ones can seem appealing but often times you'll suffer due to limited and average food options and rooms not so nice. Especially since this is a first time - meaning you likely won't do this many times, make sure its a trip to remember.

Thanks everyone I'll look into each one i do appreciate all the input you guys have brought up something I had not thought of

Cancun between November and March. We go late January, last two resorts were Iberostar Grand Paraiso and just got back from Finest Playa Mujures. Can't go wrong with either one.

The Cancun area is even better now that SW flies there. Love me some SW.

Playa is a good spot. If you are not afraid, rent a car and drive to Coba, Chichen Itza (around 3 hours from playa), and Tulum. All great Mayan ruins. My wife and I rented a car and didn't have any issues. It's expensive due to the insurance, but worth it for the freedom. Xel Ha is good times. We stayed about a block away from the beach and barely got in the water in 4 days. We are more history interested than laying around. Good times either way. Can't remember the hotel. Will post it if I think of it.

Villa La Estancia in Puerto Vallarta - awesome 5 start quiet resort. Great Beach. Go to VBRO and rent a condo. Fantastic Condos. Will be cheap in June. Can choose daily all inclusive or eat at a lot of great local resturuants of large grocery store down the road. Been all over Mexico - its our favorite spot. Direct 3:45 minute flight from Chicago. Let me know if you have any more questions. I will post a link to a couple of the condos we stayed in.

Above link is an example condo at Villa La Estancia in PV. Just google Villa La Estancia Nuevo Vallarta and a number of them should pop up. Read the reviews - all 5 stars. You should be able to get an awesome 1 bedroom for under $200/night. Great place if you like quiet and like to switch between eating local, eating in Condo (groceries) or doing daily all inclusive. Probably a little more expensive than doing all inclusive in Cancun, Play-del-Carme area but I think weather is more predictable on Ocean vs. Gulf side.
