Good lord. Driving through different areas of town today is enough to drive you crazy. From the orange cone obstacle course on S 70th to the S. 27th street one lane nightmare by Hwy 2. After dealing with the one lane on Hwy 77 for 4 months driving to work, now they close a section of Old Cheney and divert all of that traffic down Warlick to 77. I know Lincoln had 10 million left over from the last big project and it's good they are FINALLY fixing the roads but damn Seems like EVERY part of Lincoln is one big orange cone. Wouldn't think Lincoln would have so many potholed roads with all this but yet we still do!! OK..Rant over....

Hey, at least it isn't 144th & Blondo to 156th & Blondo in Omaha. I swear that road has been under construction since about the beginning of time.

Funny it has taken over 2 months to install a turn lane (de-accelaration lane) at 33rd and Superior...

There are a ton of roads under construction (70th, O St, 27th, Old Cheney). It is inconvenient but part of me says about darn time in getting some of these roads repaired.

Did you read the proposed new intersection at 14th/oldcheney will take 6-7 years to complete (they aren't going to start it for 3-4 yrs tho...)?

Driving around Lincoln sucks. Driving around Lincoln on a Friday afternoon is totally insane.

Yup, the elevated roundabout at Warlick and Old Cheney. The worst intersection in Lincoln. Right down the road from my house. It is needed but that will be a looong painful process!!

I agree but holy moly it only took 9 yrs to redo 6 lanes between lincoln/Omaha...

That elevated roundy is going to be something. Have a few friends over at Fiserv (formerly infotech)...that's going to be a fiasco getting in and out of there during that construction...

Old Cheney between Warlick and 77 was dangerous. It needed work after the flood. Unfortunate because like you said, this whole damn town is under construction.

That is absolutely the stupidest traffic plan ever. They need to fire all the dumbasses who are in love with roundabouts in the planning dept.

And then fire the dumbasses who run the stoplights. It is damn near impossible to make it through 2 in a row.

I live near 14th and Fletcher. Only 4 minutes from work and pretty much everything I need is within 2-3 miles so running into construction isn't an issue. Rarely have to drive past Superior going south.

Just bought a second home in Omaha. My word for what they charge in property taxes they have the worst streets in any city I've been in other than Chicago. How much waste and fraud is there in Omaha city government? At least Lincoln fixes their darned streets.

trust me, you dont have bad roads in comparison to some others...

property taxes is another matter, but other places pay for it somewhere else.

a couple thousand per year for city property tax on a less than 200,000 residential investment property? That's almost as much as South Dakota STATE property tax and we have less sales tax and ZERO income tax. AND our city streets are in GREAT shape. Amazing.

that sucks, no doubt, but we have somewhat reasonable taxes in okla, higher than sd's, but nothing to show for - crappy roads and bridges (getting better, but only because of fed funding, i think - so thanks!) and most places education struggle. sd is probably an outlier.

and we have seemingly steady stream of politicians (that tend to harp on 'morality' issues) being brought up on corruption/criminal charges...fraud in govt is redundant in most instances.

You don't have less sales tax in South Dakota. The rate is lower than Nebraska's, but South Dakota's is a very broad-based sales tax that is applied to a lot more services than in most states.

How many of these construction projects in Lincoln will be finished by the first Husker football game of the season? Make that the 2015 season.

IIRC, doesn't this whole roundabout fad has to do with getting federal money benefits for installing them? The one on 14th and Superior turned into a clusterf**k resulting in those fences and permanent lane closures. Yeah Lincoln, let's take a perfectly fine intersection and complicate it further just so you can get some money.

The street system in Lincoln is what happens when too many people in our government didn't have much foresight. Big mistake to not have either 27th, 33rd, or 48th be four lanes all the way. Now it's too late to do anything about the issue.

For the most part, the road system in Lincoln is fine. It rarely takes me more than 15 minutes to get across Lincoln. I like roundabouts because I think traffic flows better through them than traffic lights. I like the one way streets getting across town, but it kind of sucks in the downtown area. I don't remember coming across any potholes in Lincoln.

Yeah, there are a lot of areas that could be better. I usually try to avoid 27th and 48th. I use 33rd, and 40th instead and seems to be faster. There should be 2 lanes all the way through 27th and 48th.

I don't understand why people hate roundabouts so much. The only reason the traffic lights are bearable for me is I time them and try to go through at the highest speed possible. I also avoid lanes with trucks. If I'm driving behind someone turning off the road, I leave plenty of room and then close the gap so I am always driving at the highest average speed.

Q street in Omaha from 180th to 192 seems to be the slowest of the slow. There might be a few workers for the entire thing if I ever see any. The planning seems to be very poor. The area seems abandoned around 192nd. It's almost like they blocked off a lane for no reason.

I agree on the flow of the roundabouts. They do flow better. Problem is many people don't know how to use them correctly. Let alone a 3 lane one that they put in on Superior. I used to live over there and lost track of how many idiots would just barrel into a roundabout hitting another car thinking they didn't even need to stop. Changing lanes while in the roundabout and swiping another car. But I strongly disagree on the you "didn't come across many potholes in Lincoln" comment. They are out of control in MANY places!!!

Which is why roundabouts don't work here. I do agree that they are a convenience IF used correctly. However, people in this town can't be trusted to follow traffic rules in a roundabout.

So many idiots get into them and stop. So friggin dangerous and annoying!!!

The problem with 14th and Old Cheney is terrible planning and high speed limits. Specifically, Old Cheney and Warlick has seen some horrible wrecks because of bad city planning, too many cars and high speeds. I guess I would sacrifice having slightly more frequent fender benders (with a roundabout) for the occasional really, really dangerous accident. I also frequent those intersections every day btw.

Roundabouts are fine. Much, much more efficient. Speaks volumes about your general population IQ if they struggle comprehending how they should work. It's really not that hard of a concept. Those "idiot" fences they installed sabotage some of the efficiency of the roundabout. They also lost major efficiency when they had to close one of the lanes off b/c people couldn't figure out how it worked.. People also can't figure out how a yield sign works (hint: it's NOT a stop sign). However, city official did the citizens NO favors in signage explaining how to use the intersections. Ever seen someone try to use the crosswalks they put in around this? So dangerous as people don't pay attention to the crosswalk stoplight since they are always blinking (which normally means pay attention to something...but they blink in normal scenarios so people become immune when they do change to red). Not a good system...someone is going to get hurt using those things

Couldn't agree more on the untimed stoplights every two blocks in the this town. I don't see much pro-activeness from the local Lincoln gov on street conditions or street lights. They say if there's a problem with either to let them now. So they way they do their job is to run over the same pothole/sit at the same intersection where no traffic is going and not fix either until the public calls in to demand it. That's messed up IMO...

15 minutes to get across town? Maybe East to West it is but North to South is more 20-30 minutes. Instead of less traffic lights and more efficiency, the city seems to be trending to more traffic lights. The population of Lincoln continues to grow and the city gov needs to be proactive in making travel more efficient (they have all of the traffic "cameras" around town, need to use them. Make lights flashing late at night, etc)
