Here is the situation, my sister and her boyfriend (father of her newborn child) signed a year lease together, both names are on the contract. Long story short, turned out this guy had been cheating on her and she broke it off and moved in with my parents. Now she is trying to find a way to get out of her portion of the lease. Any options here?
Landlord said that she could get her name off the lease, but the ex-boyfriend would have to agree and he would also need to qualify on his own to have that apartment. One, I don't think he would agree as he has already told my sister she is paying half the rent for the remaining 9 months, she was the one who submitted the deposit for the place, and he would not qualify for the apartment on his own.
The other option they gave us would be to break the lease and pay whatever fee associated with that, which I believe would be cheaper than continuing to pay out the rent. Again though, we were informed that this would require having the ex-boyfriend agree to it, which he won't.
Is she pretty much stuck paying the $450 a month, which is half the rent, for the remaining 9 months or do we have any other options here?
