Thinking of getting myself and daughter some rod/reel combos for Christmas as she has enjoyed a little fishing in the past. Now this would be for some light easy going fishing initially . Now if she enjoys it a lot it could turn into more. Just putting it out there that it's easy going so any advice or recommendations I get keep that in mind .
So with that said . I'm thinking spin cast would be easiest. (she's 10 and not super experienced obviously ) pros cons? If spin cast is the direction if do indeed go I had a few reels in mind as possibilities . thoughts or reviews on these welcome .

You can't really go wrong by asking the salesman. Spending more than 60 or 70 on a reel is not necessary unless you spend everyday on the water. Rods are a matter of feel and preference. I have a big one for catfish, 3 seperate ones for bass/walleye/trolling, and 2 little ultralights for panfish and Spring Crappie.

My best advice? Get a Frozen fishing pole. My 4 year old daughter catches as many fish as everyone else on that thing.

Snoopy Rod and Reel!!!

Just a thought and I know you are looking for it to be a gift... but maybe just take her to the store and sort of let her pick out what she thinks she would like it would probably be a fun time for both of you and she might like it even more

The Zebco 33 had always been the workhorse of the cheap fishing reels.

I just graduated my sons to spinning reels and baitcasters this summer. The 12yo handles the baitcaster like a pro (better than me) but the 9yo gets a few backlashes. They both handle the spinning reels with ease. I'm relieved to be finally done with the spin cast reels as they constantly twist the line and seize up. Not a fan. But I agree the Zebco 33 is probably the best of that design.

I never put in enough time to learn a baitcaster. Seems simple, but not for me apparently.

My Dad tells me the old-school baitcasters were nearly impossible. But I have to say the new ones are pretty simple to pick up. They have two adjustments, the first you adjust to the weight of your lure and the second is a magnetic brake. Takes 10 seconds to adjust to a new bait and you can cast a LONG way when they're set. I get a real kick out of watching my sons cast them! And my wife has become a pro at getting the backlashes out!

I would buy a set that is a medium action rod with a spin cast reel for any type of fishing... If you want just change the strength of the line for her for different types of fish large or small for her. The set doesn't need to that great of she doesn't use it often obviously.

Go to Scheels. Their rods have a no questions asked warranty. It's amazing how many broken rods my uncles have replaced.

If she is only going to fish on occasion, I would go with an underspin. Baitcasters can be hard to learn and nothing makes fishing less enjoyable than constantly untangling backlash.
