OT Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn?

I saw Pink Floyd - The Wall (the movie) for the first time at a midnight movie in 1985 in Lincoln. There was a lot to get from the movie. I was so hacked when I tried to take my sister to see The Wall in the summer of 1986 in Fort Worth and they were showing Rocky Horror instead. Not the same at all. I have known people that got into that, but not me.

My very first CD was The Wall. Soon followed by Dark Side of the Moon. I had purchased them before I bought my first CD player. Had to have something to play and I didn't have any Floyd on vinyl so they were a natural choice for first CD albums. I'm guessing 1987 when CDs really blew up and there was the last record (vinyl) purchased and saving up for a CD player. Later got Wish You Were. I love that album. Animals and that crazy laughing that seemed to float around. Pipers At the Gates of Dawn was so trippy.

My opportunity to see Floyd was in 1987. They came to Texas Stadium on November 21, 1987 (sans Roger Waters). Unfortunately, I was in Nebraska to witness the Game of the Century II (Nebraska vs OU) on that day. If we would have won it would have topped Floyd easily. That would have to wait until 1989 when we throttled OU 42-25.

I was really in Waters' solo stuff. I had Radio K.A.O.S. on disc when it came out. I bought Amused to Death while I was in the Navy. All great stuff. People like Roger Waters still want to play for an audience. That's been difficult to do in the time of COVID-19.

I've watched that a few times and am not following what he says at the end....after the last "Bring the boys back home" he says " especially from Portland you effing prick" is he speaking to the last President?? And what boys is he referring to??

I know enough about the guy to know we live on different planets politically but whatevs...but I am curious what he meant by that if anyone knows.

Probably talking about the warzone in Portland over the summer and former president Donald Trump wanting to send troops out there.

he seems to overuse his platform to push politics

He would say you havn't been listening to his music all this time... Pink Floyd has always been counterculture, drug using subversives with a more than healthy distain and mistrust of "The Machine*" by the way witch one's Pink?

*NOT the AMC Rebel Machine.

I am a huge Floyd fan, andI am very familiar with the music. Even the obscure. However, he became completely engulfed with the politics after Floyd. His work after Pink Floyd is mostly recycled material from The Wall, chords and content. Going to his shows is a strange experience. Its war footage, ranting about particular politicians, asking people to vote etc. There was certainly politics in Pink Floyd's music. They also made music about all sorts of other things. Roger just lasered in on politics because his dad died senselessly in war. Once he went solo, it became political sermon. Cringe at times. One of the greats, and I have played some of their songs live for a long time. I also think Gilmour on his own struggles. His new album is not good. They needed each other to balance out.

Every time I have seen Roger, he seems to overuse his platform to push politics. I understand the music is inspired by life events that shaped his world view, but he became consumed in political bullshit at one point. Strangled his creativity.
Yes, Roger has always been sort of an enigma. But I can fully accept him, because at the end of the day, there is none better than Pink Floyd.

Lol. Fully accept him? I can separate someone's political views from their work, unless they make it the focal point of their work, to their own detriment nonetheless. I appreciate his contributions to Pink Floyd, and some of his solo work, however most of his solo stuff missed as it was recycled material musically and lyrically. Same with Gilmour. I love the music, but i don't understand the "But I can fully accept him" sentiment. I took the time to learn and perform about 30 of their songs, so the genius isn't lost on me.

Let me put it this way...their music so far outweighs anything else that I can put things like political views/outbursts aside.

Pink Floyds music is good to you, so anything Roger Waters does/says/plays is barred from honest interpretation/criticism. Got it.

I completely disagree with his politics and many of his opinions. That being said, Pink Floyd is one of my favorite all time bands. So I do this strange thing and enjoy the music and let him share his opinions instead of trying to cancel him when he says something that does not line up with my beliefs. Weird...huh?

I can understand walters wanting to take down the wall in germany after it served it's useful purpose, it let capitalism triumph over communism (after socialism ran it's failed course),
but the wall between jihad mohamidisum and old testament legalism is a different deal, so a wall is serving a useful purpose there.
and the wall on the southern borders helps keep a distance between ms-13 cartels, and drug addict liberal snowflakes, so it serves a useful purpose there.
walters should work on the wall he made with gilmore, mason, etc. first and foremost
let us change the things we can and accept the things we can't change and the wisdom to know the difference

Understand this is a Pink Floyd reference, but the real Vera Lynn died last year at the age of 103.

i think you misunderstand me. Pink floyd music is great and i enjoy it. I have left the country and spent thousands to see Dave Gilmour and Roger. I once payed 450 dollars for a ticket to see roger, only to have him talk about middle eastern politics for 30 minutes in the middle of a show that was rerun progressions of The Wall, being passed as new material. wild, and non musical. nobody is canceling anyone pal. I just find it unfortunate that Roger became obsessed with politics, and started putting out rubbish music and rubbish concerts. Again, i have performed Floyd songs for years, some songs you have probably never even heard of. I have spent tons of cash on seeing them in person and own every piece of vinyl they put out. its not hate. Just an observation. See i do this strange thing called calling balls and strikes. Never called for cancelation. Just pointed out his cringe political streak.

Never got into Pink Floyd, but know some of their stuff and it's brilliant.

Some of this with Waters and or Gilmore sounds very similar to Rage Against the Machine. AMAZING and talented as all hell. But sometimes to enjoy it have to ignore the politics to a degree. That and Zach deLaRocha and Tom Morello never seemed to capture the magic they had together in solo stuff. While Morello and Wilk and Commeford were GREAT with Chris Cornell in Audioslave, and deLaRocha shined ever so briefly for a 5 song ep with One Day as a Lion,. never the same as with Ratm.

Politically charged music is fine. Unhinged, political ranting at concerts billed as musical performances is a whole different deal. I am seeing that there are some on here that can't fathom liking someone's music, while also disagreeing with the way they handle business. I don't have to ignore Roger Water's last 20 years of political trash to enjoy the music he created before.

My first exposure to Floyd would have been approx 1979(ish) and a year or so later I was hooked. Moving up to 1982 when I was a freshman Z92 was having a battle of the bands/songs one Friday night and Floyd was up against somebody I don't remember but I was hanging with my buddy and I asked "who do you think is gonna win"? He says to me "It's Friday night and people listening right now are smoking bongs, so Floyd". He was right.
