You can get two world records in a single Olympic race. I never heard it before but the first swimmer in a relay can get a world record for their leg and then the team can set a world record all in the same race.
I had heard that before and how crazy would that be?
Well it almost happened in Phelps last relay. Can it happen in track and field? I would doubt it because of the baton hand-off.
The way I understood it, is that the initial swimmer was ahead of the world record pace after his leg was completed. That's why it stands out so much. I never heard any breakdowns of legs 2, 3 or 4, except that when the last guy finishes first, the "team" finishes first. You can get two world records in a single Olympic race.
