OT: Best concert you've been to.

Heard Metallica blew Dokken off the stage - as they had to follow them during this tour. What was your assessment?

Dokken was bigger than Metallica at the time. However, I've seen Dokken more than once and they never impressed me live. Maybe a smaller venue would help them. Metallica? The general consensus was that they were lame. Just stood there. Seek & Destroy was the highlight for me. I believe it was a pre ...And Justice For All show.

I was a very different person as a youth and went to countless concerts.

You’d maybe think my favorite concert would be something like the California Jam in 1974. (Or the California Jam II in 1977) These were great events to attend but as concerts go they weren’t great. We had to park 3 miles away in a vineyard. (At least we didn't have to park on the freeway like lots of others did) There were lines leading into the raceway that were so long that people became inpatient and started walking on the top of the park cars to try to speed things up. (I pity anyone who parked anywhere close to the raceway) Once we were in the raceway infield, the closest we could get was approximately 2 football fields away. There were insufficient restrooms and water/food facilities to handle the crowd. (They planned for over 100,000 but end up with over 200,000 paid and countless others who didn’t) It was pretty hot for the first one in April and they had to pass out water bottles to the crowd to keep us all hydrated. After a while someone got the bright idea to start throwing these bottles. The crowd quickly got the hint. Now imagine around 10,000 water bottles all being thrown into the air at once. Also imagine being in the middle of close to 250,000 people and needing to go to the restroom or the guys having bad acid trips walking around naked. o_O As a youth I enjoyed it, but as I look back on it now, not so much.

No, for me my favorites were Led Zeppelin at the L.A. Forum (1977) or the Moody Blues at the L.A. Forum (Not sure of the year)

P.S. The B-52s at the Hollywood Palladium (1982) was fun.

Another good one was when we saw ACDC as an opening act for ZZ Top at the Long Beach Arena in 1975. This was when they were not very well known here in the US and Bon Scott was still the lead singer. We sat close to the stage but right in front of the speakers. My ears still ring from that concert.

I'll say it again, I was a very different person in my youth.

The one time I was going to see the Who was at Anaheim Stadium and it is the Best Concert I Never Saw. We arrived the night before and stayed in the parking lot. We indulged in a number of pre-concert activities Smokin
clip_image001.gif
for quite a few hours before trying to catch a few winks around 2:00 A.M. We woke around 5:00 and were in line at 6:00 A.M. (It was already 90 degrees.) We waited in line for a few of hours and it was now somewhere north of a 100 degrees :( and we're jammed together like sardines so it seemed even hotter. :( I was in perfect health but some of my concert activities
clip_image001.gif
from the night before were starting to react badly with the heat and my lack of sleep. Within a half hour they were rushing me to the hospital.
clip_image002.gif
clip_image002.gif
They weren't able to determine what caused the reaction but there were plenty of things that it could've been. With all the "activities" I partook in, it could've been a whole lot worst than just taking a trip to the hospital and missing a concert.

Journey at reunion arena dallas in 1984 ish

Head East in some small bar outside of Wahoo in 1979 I believe as the store up a venue somewhere a few days earlier and the lincoln venue cancelled them .

Mellencamp in 1984ish in dallas

Pantera, Coal Chamber, Machine Head and Faith No More in KC @ Sandstone.
Pantera owned that stage. Best live band ever.
Moody Blues also, whole family got to go, good memory. That was KC also.
Ozzy, Korn(shortly after 1st album was released) Amazing....
Deftones was also at that show, they blew me away. That 1st album is badass.
Been to a lot of concerts but Pantera takes the cake fellas

Blue Oyster Cult in the late 80's somewhere about an hour from Omaha. Not because of the concert itself, I barely remember it..... but because on the way there we got pulled over doing 100+ with enough alcohol and other stuff in the car to be in some pretty big trouble. No ticket, or car search, just a friendly warning to slow down. Those were the days. Now your car would be impounded, with several tickets, and it would be on your record forever. If I had to pick a concert I actually remember, it would be Bryan Adams in '86 at the Civic, because I took one of the best looking girls in our class and everyone was "wishing they were me that night" (Meatloaf ripoff, couldn't resist).

Dylan opened for Santana. Great Woods Amphitheater in eastern Mass, early 90s.

It's great to read how many shows we have been to together!

The one's that stand out to me - all are great for their own reasons:

1st concert - Black Sabbath (Dio) - Civic
Cheap Trick - Civic
The Call - Peony Park Ballroom
Faith No More - Peony Park Ballroom
Pearl Jam - Ranch Bowl 1992 (then the next day in Lawrence, KS & then 2 months later at Lallapalooza in St Louis)
Daughter - Slowdown - because I got to go with my daughters :)
U2 last month - because my wife has always wanted to see them and I got to be with her the first time
PetRock - brings back so many memories

Oh gawd that reminds me, Peony Park Ballroom....Saw Eddie Brickell and the New Bohemians (no way I spelled that right but don't care) took my mom's secretary at the time, Tiffany (Smokin hawt), OMG!!! Leather mini skirt, she was AWESOME!!!! How did I forget that concert, and her!!! Yikes, I am getting old.

How is it that we've gotten into two pages into this thread and no one has mentioned the bragging rights concert at Peony Park in '91 - Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam?

My friend asked me to go with her to this show but I was too tired. Sick:(

I was somewhat disappointed by Led Zep 1977 at Madison Square Garden. My best was my first. The Who at the Philadelphia Spectrum, December 15, 1975.

I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in KC in 2014 and I am pretty sure that tops my list of most amazing show experiences. Granted, I only started going to shows when I was like 16 in 1999, but I have seen some damn good ones (Including Bruce Springsteen, which is a 3.5 hour marathon of awesomeness).

We were right up front and got crawled over and screamed at by Mr. Cave himself. It was amazing.

Elton John at Sandstone Ampitheater in Kansas City 1989.

Boston in Lincoln in about 1987.

I was at that Boston concert :p Worst concert I've ever been to is hands down, easy call, wish I could roll back time: R.E.M. in Lincoln around that same time. Literally the most horrible live band I've ever seen.

I saw The Cult at the Uptown theater in Kansas City in the early 2000s, and would pay good money to see them sing just one song... She Sells Sanctuary. What a powerful song. So much that our band added that to our set list.

Always wanted to see Kiss live, and never did so. That will always be a regret.

It's already been mentioned ,but Kiss and Seger in Lincoln has to be near the top. So many good shows with too many years since then , makes them hard to rate.

1. Wilco in front of maybe 400 people at The Beaumont Club shortly after "Summerteeth" came out in '99. Jay Bennett was still with the band. Reverend Horton Heat opened.

2. "X" at the Drumstick in Lincoln in '84. John Doe pummeled a guy in the crowd because the guy threw beer on Exene.

3. Replacements at the Drumstick right after "Tim" came out. Either '84 or '85. They quit right in the middle of Yummie Yummie Yummie (I Got Love in My Tummy) during the encore, dropped their instruments onstage, and left the stage.

4. The Jayhawks in front of maybe 100 people at The Grand Emporium in KC in probably 2003.

5. REM at the Civic Music Hall in '84 or '85. The DBs opened and IMO upstaged REM.

6. Alejandro Escovedo at Davey's Uptown in KC in front of maybe 80 people. The man is very good. That was probably 2002.

7. The Derailers at Davey's Uptown in KC in 2002 or 2003.

8. Neko Case at The Rococo in Lincoln in 2007. Although the volume had to be kept low because of the tenants next to the Rococo.

You didn't see REM at the 20's or Howard St Tavern? :)

I still say Metallica Justice tour blows anything away I've ever witnessed, but the most impressive thing I've ever seen was George Lynch play with Lynch Mob at a bar with a stage about waist high with no security. He slaughtered the guitar for an hour right in our faces and you could literally reach out and touch his guitar while he played. My ears rang for a couple days. As a guitar nut I'll never see anything like that ever again. Got to hang out with him and Fred Coury from Cinderella after the show too. Killer night.

I was at that Ozzy show.. Ozzy was much much better than I expected.. Machine Head is also very good live.

Awesome on GL. Seen Cinderella too. We had the best music. It sucks getting older and rarely seeing concerts. I saw ZZ Top 5th row at Reunion in front of the right stack. Next day was first day of classes. My ears rang all that day. Saw Van Halen in Fort Worth and sat 4th row left center. Caught Michael Anthony's jersey after the encore. So many great shows!

Don't panic yet, Kiss has about 3 farewell tours left in them. Laughing

These bands I've seen several times and never been disappointed.
Metallica, AC/DC and Iron Maiden.

Other good ones I've seen.
Journey with Bryan Adams
Kiss with Queensryche, the best Queensryche show I saw was the Operation Mindcrime tour.
Pink Floyd at Arrowhead.
311 at a Lincoln bar, don't remember which one.
Beastie Boys with Fishhead and Murphy's Law.
Better Than Ezra
Porno for Pyros with Candlebox and Our Lady Peace.
Ratt with Bon Jovi.
And some years back I seen Shooter Jennings put on pretty damn good show down at Ribfest.

For comedy concerts the top 2 I've seen are George Carlin and Jim Gaffigan.
