OSU looked to go Independent in 2020

This isn't new information. They weren't looking at "going independent" that would mean leaving the B1G entirely. They were interested in being allowed to play anyone they could schedule for football as was Nebraska. That's completely different.

The B1G said no and we all saw the rest. There was a lot of squawking but ultimately $$$$ won the day. You leave the B1G you're leaving the B1G's money so people can make noise all they want but they're not going to throw that cash away.

I'm not a "Kevin Warren Guy" but he's just a figurehead, he's not the conference. The conference does what the ADs, Chancellors, and Presidents of its member universities vote to do. Kevin Warren doesn't dictate policy with a sweep of his mighty hand.

The coaches and players always wanted to play, the Presidents voted not to do that.

Where he and his office have been bad is staying in front of the story and controlling the public message.

Yes. Warren has been a convenient fall guy for the pointy heads that actually direct the policy. He plays the role well.

Kevin came out and said it would not be revisited that lack of foresight is on him. His inconsistency with not knowing about actual votes and vote counts is on him. Presidents etc were dumb. KW is the server for the communication between schools and the conference, if you didn't notice no one knew wtf was going including presidents etc. That tweet is from Gene Smith himself asking if they could go independent.

Spot on. A leader that says we won’t revisit decisions after facts change is a shitty leader

the entire stupid f'n episode was a disaster.
its getting worse...and i'm glad.

I see people are conveniently forgetting the multiple reports where warren indeed did influence policy in a huge way behind closed doors.

He’s supposed to be a figurehead. In 2020, he was an active participant, seemingly only caring about his own personal brand and gain while throwing every single B1G athlete in front of a speeding freight train time and again.

He is a coward and should be respected/protected by precisely no one.

I’m sure Desmond Howard will be on ESPN at any moment saying to kick Ohio State out of the conference.
No he won’t. He’ll say OSU has the cache to investigate all options that are for the betterment of the student athlete or some other similar dribble. Knowingly or unknowingly doing so as a direct jab towards Nebraska and the disdain he holds for the football program.

Sometimes you act because you are required to do so by the people who employ you or you are no longer employed. This was not an individual decision. He just takes the pot shots and is paid to do so.
again, there were NUMEROUS reports that warren was actively influencing the decision to cancel football in 2020.

if anything, he's hidden behind the presidents (who are also cowards).

He is also the one that escalated the division between Nebraska and the big10 by publicly saying Nebraska would no longer be in the conference. Those are discussions that should be in private.

Kevin Warren doubting the validity of the OSU parents wanting to play was also interesting. Every time you think Kevin Warren can't get any more incompetent, he out does himself.

Heard Gary Sharp talk about this earlier today..

Warren is a POS commissioner and the conference isn’t in good hands moving toward the future. He is totally incompetent to lead this conference...

Maybe they're finally coming around and seeing the light. Gary and crew sure carried water for the conference for a long time

Find it interesting that it is a news story now. It WAS already reported way back last Fall that OSU was considering playing a non-conference schedule if anyone was paying attention at the time. OSU, just like Nebraska, considered putting together a full non-conference slate just for the pandemic year when the conference itself said it wasn't going to play. Just for the pandemic year only. Neither school ever considered leaving the B1G, they just wanted to play football. That's all. Of course, the conference spurred on by other jealous schools squashed even those plans and wouldn't allow it.

I'll go ahead and disagree on that timeline. Nebraska escalated the situation by seeking to line up games with non-con opponents after the B1G had expressly said that wasn't going to be happening. OSU did the same.

And it went like it did for the same reason that NU got to be big dick in the old Big 8 and Iowa State didn't. We used to be the elite program around there. Now we're not and OSU is, and that comes with special privileges.

It was basically this:

You can't play non-con games.
You can't stop us.
You're technically right, but you won't be in this conference any more if you do that.
Well you guys are stupid.

Frost and NU never missed an opportunity to make it clear that they weren't on board with the conference decision and they'd rather be playing football. They're allowed to do that, but nobody at the league office is required to like it.

It's one thing if your neighbor doesn't like the color of your house. It's another if they bitch to you about it all the time. They're not forcing you to buy new siding but you still don't like them.
