oregon gets DT pagano..

Yeah thats why he's wanted by everyone including us as a graduate transfer and projected as the best overall dt next year.. no we should'nt forfeit..but it certainly makes that game much more difficult. Lets hear you argue that...or did you have any more knowledge you'd like to share with this board??

1 player in a non-skill position does not suddenly make that game much more difficult.

does it make it easier? it most definately helps them. especially with arguably our weakest position going into that game in the offensive line. look im not making him into the next suh but dont be blind.. arguing that this does not make their defense at minimum the dline much better is just anyone looking to argue against it..my guess is if we landed this guy you all would be oh man he is instantly going to improve the whole d.. some people just love to argue

I wouldn't be saying that it suddenly made our game with them much easier if he was coming here. And yes, you essentially are making him into the next Suh by saying that our game with them is suddenly much more difficult. I'm not somebody who loves to argue, but I will call out ridiculous exaggeration when I see it.

Truehuskerfan is right. He's not Suh and it's doubtful he will dominate the game in any kind of way. Oregon still sucks...with a new coach and new systems. We will be fine.

Oregon finished dead last in the PAC12 north last year AND they are making wholesale changes in their coaching staff

If we lose this game it is going to be a long year. If Riley is better than Pelini in all phases of coaching as most believe we shouldn't be wringing our hands over a game with a team that was a bottom dweller in the PAC last year.

I would rather be discussing how many wins in the games with PSU-OSU-WISC are we going to have given the fact that 2 of the 3 are at home.

either way I dont see that game ending very well for us
This attitude is funny to me. If the situation were completely reversed and we were a team coming off a 4-8 season and had a new coach, nobody would give us a chance to beat a team that had won 9 games the previous year, even at home. For that matter, the situation was very similar last year-we were coming off a 6-7 season and playing a team that had gone 9-4 the previous year and starting a new QB. The only real difference was that we didn't have a first year head coach. Yet considering all that, there were a lot of people that gave us little chance of winning last year, even at home. Some predicted a blowout. It proves once again that a lot of people on this board go out of their way to make things look the most bleak and difficult for us.

ridiculous exaggeration.. lol stating that adding this gent to their team makes them better is not an exaggeration. it in fact makes them better thats why its called an upgrade in talent. yes even one player can make a difference especially in the trenches where games are won and lost. Again I hope our oline handles him. I was just hoping he would choose oklahoma and we wouldnt have to face him..

At the same time, teams with talent can turn it around in a year easily. We see it all the time. Weren't we tied for last last year in the west?

If the players at Oregon buy in to what the coaches are selling, they could easily turn it around. On the other hand, if they suck again next year and we happen to be one of their wins, that will be bad. But if they go on to win 9 games, including one over us, that's not the end of the world.

I see us coming out of Oregon with a victory, but I'm not ready to guarantee it, nor am I going to say a loss to Oregon is the beginning of the end for Riley ether...

Edit: it all depends on the kind of season Oregon has overall, which will determine what a loss to them might look like for me.

I can't believe we are more worried about Oregon than anyone else. It's not a gimme. However, Oregon has been declining in talent for a while now. That's not saying they don't have talent, but under Helfrich the decline was evident. Reminded me of Solich. Oregon went 4-8 last year. So, while they could pull a Nebraska and improve four games that doesn't necessarily include a rising program like NU. One player will not make a difference in this game.

Its the location ...I dont see us doing well in Eugene

The location didn't seem to matter to those who were predicting us to lose last year. I would say we have every bit as tough of a home atmosphere as they do. Some of their fans even said so last year.

This is the year to beat Oregon, they are not a great team and we get them early to start the year. I like our chances if we can figure out some sort of a running game. Diaco will be the X factor, expect him to unleash the full defense to the rest of the country.

GBR

And I guess the fact we were missing most of our best players had nothing to do with the outcome either.

Even if Gates or Conrad were 100% healthy it would not have mattered. My point is one player in a non-skilled position can make a huge difference. If they DT's/ DE's don't make a difference why are they one of the most valued positions coaches want in recruiting and in the draft.

He'll have a hell of a time trying to chase down all the wide open receivers running wild after catching passes.

I assume you are comparing him to Derek Barnett, and if so it is a ludicrous comparison. Scott Pagano had 6 1/2 tackles for loss and 2 sacks to his credit over 3 years at Clemson. Derek Barnett had 52 TFL and 33 sacks over the same amount of time. The two aren't even in remotely the same category.

Again, I am not comparing them. I simply said non skilled players do make a difference and can impact a game.

Still think we have the upper hand in this game. They are going threw both offsenive and defensive changes with different schemes, we're only going threw with defensive changes and both defenses need improvement from last seasons stats.

There returning a QB last year from I believe the last half of the season but I also think we have an upgrade at QB play from last year as well...

I tend to agree with most of your thoughts.

However, Nebraska is also transitioning on offense this year though not as dramatic as Oregon. Tommy Armstrong to Tanner Lee or POB...there is no doubt that 2017 is a year for transition on offense at Nebraska. Winking

I did the Terry Wilson Jr is deciding to transfer from there, guess we didnt lose out too much there

jeebus, the last we should be doing is penciling in wins at this point. Often times it can be a very fine line between a crap season and a respectable season. Don't forget, they just about beat us last year. Who knows if we would have won had their RB stayed healthy. Mind-boggling that anyone would declare this a win already.

Oregon returns 17 starters and just added another guy with NFL potential at what was something of a weak spot last year. New systems or not, we'll be underdogs in this one.

Regarding Pagano, he's played behind sick talent on the DL. Clemson has been putting guys in the league from the DL with a lot of regularity. Their starting DTs this season are both likely to be top 10 picks over the next two seasons and were both five stars. Pagano would have started for the vast majority of schools.

It's year three and time to start finding out if Riley is a better coach than Pelini or just a better human being.

Want to start seeing it on the field rather than just reading about it.

Losing to Oregon would set off alarm bells that we may likely finish worse than an average Pelini year.

I think Oregon probably has more talent than we do. Also, we are playing at their place while breaking in a new QB and a new DC. I have faith in these guys, but I think it's a little naive to think the transition won't have some bumps along the way. I will be happy with a win, but won't take a loss as proof that Riley is a failure. I am more interested in seeing how much progress this team makes over the course of the season. If we are playing our worst ball at the end of the season, then is the time to get worried.
