Just need to mix in a little more zone read and option. Option keeper worked well when we ran it. About what I expected offensively, but Langsdorf went back to what he's used to calling in certain situations. Needs to gain comfort level with running those plays on 2nd and 3rd down and medium. They set up a lot of plays well, but their shotgun runs had no precedent to keep the defense honest.
Think the offense would look a lot better with better offensive line play, but I've been saying that since...about 2001. Been about 15 years with these overall mediocre and subpar OL's. That's killed us over the years more than anything and we all know games are won in the trenches.
That said, coach Cavanagh is a highly respected coach. This was game 1 in year 1. Our OL who played today had hardly any playing experience. Not only that but it's going to take a minute to get that group going as a whole.
The OL had a lot of problems today with penalties, confusion with blitzes, not enough push in the run game (especially in the interior), etc. I'll start to form more of a concrete opinion if/when the OL develops.
These two posts borrowed from this thread about some up my feelings on the offense and on TA in particular. There's a lot of concern about fitting a square peg into a round hole. I think Tommy illustrated that he's a pretty good square with rounded edges. He's progressed a lot in the passing game throwing the timing patterns and adding a little touch to his passes but he reverts to old habits when under pressure. The o-line increased it's starting experience by 25% in this game. If it improves with experience, as one would expect, and DL can round off the corners in his play-calling square hole, the future is promising.
