You know, I can see the debate over Pelini, Solich, Callahan, etc. Football is king in Nebraska and brings in a LOT of revenue to support the entire athletic program. Football is also a cultural matter for Nebraskans.
What I don't get is a public call for the dismissal of a college baseball coach, particularly one who is a famous alumni, former pro great, really hasn't had enough time to make it his team, and has generally recruited well.
First, and I'm not trying to disparage the other sports and I respect what they do, but these sports just aren't that important to most outside of the program. Sports like college baseball, softball, wrestling, gymnastics, etc. are important to the individual participants and add to the overall culture of the University, but if they win or lose, it really doesn't change anything (you could probably make that case for football also in the larger sense, but that's another discussion). I don't remember hearing about the streets lined with people cheering the Husker bus back from the Airport after winning the NCAA Women's Bowling Championships.
Second, Baseball is the most fickle of games where a 70% record makes you elite in college (60% in the pros) and failing at the plate only 7 out of 10 times makes you a star. Baseball is also a game of streaks (see the Washington Nationals) and in a college baseball season, you might just be on a good or bad streak for a season.
Third, my God who really cares? If you do, please join me in my call for the ouster of the UNL Women's swimming and diving coach because of a lack of championships over the past couple years. Losing a lot of sleep over that one.
