OLBs Atop the Depth Chart

The move of Heinrich to OLB is a head scratcher to me. He was in the two deep at ILB and we have two Sr's starting at ILB, that aren't real talented.
The only way it makes sense to me is if he's our best pass rusher, but that doesn't look good on the development of guys like Tannor.

I think it's more likely he plays 1st and 2nd downs before a pass rushing specialist (assuming we have one) or extra DB comes in on obvious passing downs.

When was the last time we had playmakers at either of those positions, Gregory @ DE/OLB? David @ ILB? I'd watch Mo last year get pushed 7 yards down field on plays. Love Henrichs frame for either position.

Jojo isn't an OLB either, they're still in a position of taking a guy who could be a 90 video game rating at his natural position and having him be an 80 at OLB so they don't have to start a 65 there.

It doesn't particularly surprise me that Henrich is at OLB, you have to have athletic guys there and they added MLB depth with Mauga-Clements and with Reimer developing like he has.

I know I know lol! But man it's been awhile, I can live with Justin Fields runnin all over us but when Wisky, Purdon't and Indiana march out those statues they call QB and we don't even get a hand on those guys it drives me nuts....
Yeah the pass rush has been nonexistent for a long time. It's insanely frustrating to watch NU on defense and be yelling at the TV, "he's got ALL DAY BACK THERE!!!"

They've been serviceable against the run, but to strike zero fear into QBs is not sustainable.

Especially when those teams march out their backup QB and we make him look all B1G for one day. Hell the kid from Indiana had a career day against us and left the team...

Don't know if I believe that. If he was that good at safety, he would have stayed there. I don't think he'd be any better of a safety than he is at OLB.

Jojo is a knacker. He's just got a nose for the ball and makes plays. He brings an intensity some of the young pups can learn from. People have dogged him for whatever reason, but he always finds a way onto the field. The guy is valuable.

Agree on all that, he can hit and finds the ball. Like I said @ least he makes plays, more than the others do we march out there...

What I will look for from LB's.

1. Are they in position to make the play?

2. Then, do they make it. Get under control and straight up with the runner.

3. Do they tackle well or hit and not wrap up or have too many arm tackles?

4. I am tired of seeing them getting caught up in traffic when they blitz.

5. Quit leaving the middle of the field so wide open.

6. Looking for someone to display some LB instincts and learn to take the best angle to make a play.

Imagine if we ran a 4-2-5...would have a real athletic defense if we wanted to....but at the same time I am okay with having some more beef cause in the B10 vs Wisconsin and Iowa we will need it.

JoJo, Reimer, Henrich, Tannor with Farmer as the (nickel)

need the best lb's on the field to stop the run and rush the qb's. seems like some of these candidates haven't ever distinguished themselves on game day. caddywhompuss comes to mind or assholeoverappetite even. need to physically and aggresively manhandle the simple part of the game. if we get beat by finess and trickery then so be it.

couple familiar faces, couple new ones. need the cream to rise to the top, regardless of who it is.

looky looky, someone knew what he was talking about when I said they were moving Nick Henrichs to OLB. ;) Some gave me hell for trying to tell them this but hey....I was only passing on the info.

But in all seriousness, he’s actually playing both ILB and OLB. Per Chin, he’s just to good not to have on the field. They are trying to find ways to get him out there. That’s all. It’s not a permanent move, I pretty confident we will see him back at ILB start next season. Unless Henrichs kills it at OLB and and someone else steps up at ILB. GBR

they are actually saying Tannor has came on strong this offseason and looking good (or closing the gap to where he needs to be at). I think Dawson was the prefect position coach for him.

Sean Callahan is predicting Caleb Tannor to be the teams leader in sacks this season. If that tells you anything.

So no, that’s not it. I have a feeling we will see much, MUCH different looking Caleb Tannor this season.

Then why start Miller and Honas who have been nothing but a liability thus far? Just because they have seen the field more? No thanks. It was like Barry last year. Cool he's a SR with a good heart but nah fam

give the guys a chance, one of those guys (Honas) tore an ACL the season before and had to redshirt and the other just moved to ILB from OLB/DE the seasons before. Sounds like those 2 are coming along.

Not to mention we have Reimers who’s really blowing up and we still have Nick Henrichs at ILB too. He’s literally going to be playing both OLB and ILB. Again, they are trying to find ways to get him on the field.

. Will probably get blasted for this but I don't think he's great @ either position, but what he does do is make a play once-in-awhile which is more than the rest do....

Agree with this. He makes the spectacular play on a blitz and that is what people remember. He is not a consistent play maker. I guess people can blast me as well.

Are you speaking of JoJo? If so, I disagree. He had 10 TFL and INT for his first season as a LB. He was the only LB who made any actual plays last season.
That doesnt mean he doesn't disappear for periods of time, totally agree he was the only one who made plays....If the rest of the team played like him though it would be ok that he didn't do more.

Honas can have a pass due to injuries. Since Colin Miller is a 5th year senior with the program and still cant quite "get it", he doesn't get one.
