OL

I watched our center and right guard whiff on their blocks on the same play. Hard to believe this is the best we got. The center & right side got destroyed the whole game. We can't pull our guards or center because they aren't athletic enough. Just hard to watch anymore.

I saw that...I can't believe a freshmen can't do that.

So we have no one other than Walk Ons to play on the OL?
Gaylord and Barnett were both highly recruited. I can't understand why they aren't capable of adding some depth. A lot of teams are playing redshirt fr on the line at this point of the season (including Wisconsin). Something doesn't add up. It can't be that the scheme is too complicated to learn, because the playbook appears to be so simplified that we call only 2-3 basic running plays.

I think this is what bothers me the most. If we've got someone better that isn't playing, should have been put in for Wisconsin and rest of the season. If we don't have someone that is better, the next few years are going to be painful.

This hit my feed a few minutes ago.

In response to this.

Vrzal and Foreman had a quick exchange last night about the above play.

I fully admit I'm in the minority here but I would rather end up 8-4 and preserve the OL redshirts for the future than 9-3 or 10-2 and burn them for the last 3 games
Which is why I said Wisconsin, because it is much more difficult now. I believe the future is now. We are in a delicate holding pattern. All of the warm fuzzies that had been built up took a real hit Saturday, and having a losing record these last few games would be very bad. We absolutely need to keep positive momentum, and if pulling a redshirt or 2 can do that, it is worth it.

when a team only signs 4 o-linemen each year and they average over 4 years 3.1 stars.

You know I respect that...We had a real chance to beat Wisconsin if our line was healthy enough to call more than one run play.

10-2 might get us to a major bowl if some things go right ...Wisconsin will be better next year and we have a brutal 2018 schedule.....There is no guarantee of things getting better.

My feelings are that we don't burn the redshirts for these last few games. We're exactly where we want to be. I think that 7-2 with this year's team is pretty good. The problems we are experiencing will go away in the coming years if we don't burn those redshirts. It's all about the future and building depth. Riley doesn't just have to recruit "his team". He's had to repair the one left by Coach Pelini.

I agree with you to an extent. Im just not sure I value a redshirt as much. If you are recruiting well getting good players, how often are you playing a bunch of redshirt seniors anyway?

To me there should he a mix to maintain a good OL every year.....Look what hapenned to us on 1998 when we loss our entire starting 6 OL...We haven't been the same since.

97 was our last great OL.

Exactly. The coaches knew this was a possibility if we couldn't stay healthy. In fact, it was going to take a miracle for us to stay healthy enough to not have to go digging into the two-deep that BP left us with. Unfortunately, that has become a reality, and the house of cards he left us with was exposed on Saturday night.

If we don't want to continue to be deficient of talent and well-developed players and operate with razor thin depth charts we have to 1) recruit better and 2) be able to red-shirt the players that need to red-shirt. Pulling red-shirts at this point, or even two weeks ago, wouldn't have guaranteed us of anything. We still may be sitting at 7-2. So it's a little far-reaching to assume that burning shirts at this point in the season would have yielded a much different result. And, yes, I know we have a few freshman OLs that could play, and I think if they would have been impact players this year, the coaches would have not red-shirted them. But we're not going to burn shirts to stop the bleeding. We're going to figure out how to get through it.

I remember that play vividly. We watched it several times..... amazing

It's is a crime to not finish the season 10-2.. because we are worrying about redshirting..Is suspect....Next year the bottom could fall out over unseen circumstances....especially if we finish 8-4 or worse....so now we have to start the year with 3 inexperienced offensive lineman again...great....so when they get hurt, we can throw in more inexperience players....Those walk ons are all Seniors...there is no benefit to us this or next year.....the decision however should have been made 3 weeks ago.

Nearly all OL guys need to redshirt coming out of high school. Our entire freshman class needed the shirt.

tOSU started a true freshman at right guard against us.

Boe Wilson didn't need too...Hell we thought he would play at the beginning of the year,...I just hate to see this season derailed for the coaches over that....Running the ball better not good against Wisky would have allowed us to win the game in regulation.. ..imo

This. I wish people understood that. And it wasn't just 2011.

-2012 they took TWO OFFENSIVE LINEMEN. Corey Whitaker and Paul Thurston (transfer).

-2013 Dwayne Johnson and Zach Hannon (both haven't played) Chongo Kondolo (JUCO who didn't play much) Matt Finnin (JUCO who never played) Gabe Miller (no longer playing) David Knevel is the best of that bunch.

-2014 They finally got it going with DJ Foster, Tanner Farmer, and Nick Gates.

Pretty much three years (2011,2012,2013) of no OL recruits. This is the worse OL in Nebraska's history.

Vrzal and Foreman had a quick exchange last night about the above play.

At first, I though it looks like Utter thought it was suppose to be a double team and the guard (Whitaker) thought he was suppose to reach a linebacker. I figured since Whitaker has less experience, he was likely wrong.

But looking at it again, it looks like the DT slides across Utter's face faster than Utter can react, and he just misses him.
Nice play by the tackle.

He would have been the first shirt burned; however, I'm not sure it's fair to presume that putting in a single OL, who would be a true freshman, would change the complextion of the OL play overall. This was never going to be 'the year' so the staff decided to build for the future. I'm cool with that.

So if I'm reading all this correctly, we probably DON'T want to play an extra game in the CC...

GBR

For those not following, here's where we stand from prior classes regarding scholarship linemen. Bold is still on roster. Correct me if I'm wrong.

2013

Dwayne Johnson

Chongo Kondolo (JUCO, gone)

Matt Finnin OL (Left team)

David Knevel OL

Gabriel Miller OL (LS)

2014

Nick Gates OL

D.J. Foster OL Out for the year

Mick Stoltenberg (Switched to Defense)

Tanner Farmer OL

2015

Jalin Barnett OL

Michael Decker OL

Christian Gaylord

Jordan Ober OL (LS)

2016 all redshirting

Matt Farniok OL

3 games plus a bowl, don't cheat the redshirts now.

Foster AND Thurston would have helped us IMMENSELY this year. There's the interior that's been killing us right there. Unfortunately I think Thurston was a Bo guy and couldn't overcome that. Too late IMO to start pulling redshirts. Play the walk ons and let the chips fall where they may UNLESS a freshman or two beg to play. BTW, Barnett is just too heavy IMO. He needs to trim down a bit so he can move. The flip side of that is put him and run straight ahead behind him.

Did you mean Finnin? Because Foster would have been starting without a doubt if he wasn't injured.

I still don't get the Thurston transfer deal. I think Finnin would have been gone this year anyway, wouldn't he?

Thurston didn't even start the bowl game vs USC ahead of Utter.

I thought Thurston started and played the whole game against UCLA. In any case, he would have either started for us at guard or center with all the injuries. He would have started probably every game for us ahead of Hahn and Whitaker.

Pretty sure you are right. I thought he did too.
