I have been bullish on this year's team on the board since last Spring. And I still think we can have a good season. This is just one game and it remains to be seen how indicative it will be of our whole season. We all need to take a deep breath and let things play out.
I am curious about what knowledgeable Husker fans thought of the game in terms of the actual execution on the field. We have all had time now to vent our frustrations over last night and to let our emotions and disappointments calm down. I am assuming Riley is not going to get fired this week and that this staff will be here for a while. So please no posts about "hot seats" and "Bloners vs. non-Bloners" and so on. I am just curious what passionate fans think of the execution side of things in an objective way.
My take? Offense was solid and balanced. Bryant, Lee, and the receivers are good. The offensive line was improved in all phases of the game against a decent defensive line. I thought Conrad in particular played well. I thought Gates dominated his area despite his two penalties. Farmer needs help with his footwork. He is physical and when his technique is good he is solid. But too often he gets his feet at bad angles.
Defense? Schemes were decent although I thought we needed more press coverage. Saying we should have blitzed more is silly, I think, since their short passing game was clicking. What was apparent was that our linebackers, corners, and safeties were playing so tentatively and without instinct that they were easily blocked and taken out of plays. That happens when you are a step slow in reacting. It may look like we were not physical enough to shed blocks, but from my perspective it was mostly caused by a lack of aggressive and instinctive play. That should improve therefore as the season goes on.
Stoltenberg was hot and cold. When his pad level was good he was good. When his pad level was bad, which was half the time, he was bad. I also wonder if he is 100%. It is shocking to see a freshman get that much playing time at that spot.
It looks like all those people who were saying the transition to the 3-4 will take time were correct. My hope for this season is that we see this defense get better and better each week. Next week will be a huge test for this defense.
