Tough to watch happen, but 2 of the 4 were mommies boys who wanted to stay close to home. We'll always deal with that. But it reconfirms that our focus needs to be as high on developing players as it does on recruiting. TO built teams he didn't just recruit teams. That has to be the formula when you are sitting in the middle of the country with a small instate stable of players to choose from.

Actually, in the end TO augmented this development approach with recruiting "talent with issues" [grades, legal, etc.] to get to the next level. In retrospect this had two positive effects: 1) we got them because there was less competition for them and 2) they brought with them a killer mentality (don't know why but LP, CP, Tomich, etc. had it - they weren't about nice and it rubbed off on the team). Of course none of this would have worked without a clear offensive and defensive vision and coaches that could implement TO's vision of speed, power, and determination not to be flavor of the day.

Once we became cool we got more traditional recruits but we had to win first. We have now lost the cool and need to win again (consistently beat name teams) to start the virtuous cycle.

If you read what nate posted yesterday that's actually false

I did and I'm familiar with his work. So because his opinion is different than mine what I say is false? What exactly is false? Foster was always going to Stanford as he said since seventh grade. Chuck was a Michigan lock and Holmes is nothing more than a ego filled kid that was never serious about us.

Not my kind of author but I like the quote very much and think it applies. Riley is trying to make us better, shot for the stars, and got his teeth kicked in a little yesterday. But at least he tried. Way more than I can ever say the old staff ever did.

Some may down play it and say they weren't really pushing for all 4 but they were. I don't discredit the staffs hard work. Cav pushed hard for Sarell. The fact that they just offered the Lincoln kid just now shows Cav fought up into this week to land him.

Time for this staff to figure a few things out of what went wrong, if they can get better, and finish out this class.I hope this doesn't stop them from going after top talent in the future.

Its a step in the right direction. Last year we didn't even have any hats on the table!!

It's a step to be in the race with the big dogs at the end. It can't have helped to have such a dribbling of shit down those cream-colored pants in several of those last games.

I totally get why it happened, but it doesn't fill the program up with optimism. I desperately want to see them close on some quality DL before signing day. Absolutely MUST have them. And if 3* is all you can get, you better get em.

I dont see why people are bashing the staff. They went for gold and missed on these 4 guys. But bow they will get some 3 star guys that wont he as highly ranked but could be every bit as good. So the end result will still be slightly better than before. We still have some damn good recruits plus a steal with Bradley at 2 star.

Then was White pants, not Cream.

Why does it have to be TO's model to success? Not directed just to you, but I keep seeing posters say how TO did it and that is how we will win.

What did the Bobfather do? Wasn't he the one that took the team from way down to the title? Was it the option? Was it all running? Was it recruiting questionable players?

My overall point, we need to learn from those time but no need to copy them. Different eras will require different solutions.

Identity we don't have it.

It just seems to me that the facts speak. We are not a a good enough team and have not played well enough in big games to attract top talent unless that top talent is in your backyard...which it is not. We better have a plan to win with 3 star guys with a chip on their shoulder first.

What he wrote didn't really look like opinions. It looks like facts

I agree, Bob's model may be better suited to compare under these certain circumstances. Bob was the one who really put Husker football on the map. TO for all his glory, did inherit title teams from Bob. Football is a much different animal now but much can always be learned from the past.

The most important thing Mike can do to improve recruiting is win games. And that's kind of how Bob did it at first with Bill Jennings players. If Mike can create better buzz next year and actually show his teams legit then they will win some of these recruiting battles.

This is what gets lost in all the talk of blaming players during the season and thinking recruiting is the end all. Coaches first and foremost need to coach and develop. Now riley hasnt had time to do the developing part but in year three we should be seeing it.

So whyd we waste our time?

Is it? At least we had two playing in the game. Farinok and Raridon

Keep on making excuses, I for one don't like participation ribbons!

Why would any big fish come to Nebraska? It would SOOOO easy to recruit them away from us?

1. It is cold
2. Riley will retire when you are a soph
3. They don't win anything
4. Nebraska voted for Trump
5. There are 25 teams that send more players to the league
6. You have to live on a campus in Lincoln, and Omaha is your vacation.
7. The girls wear sweaters and jeans most of the school year
8. UNL is one of the least diverse campuses in the US
9. Arizona state has full size pools in their dorms, Nebraska has....
10. You coolest and most approachable coach has a drinking problem and won't last.
11. Just imagine being on ABC and getting beaten by 55+ by OSU.

Considering this our class is darn good the way it is. Impressed actually.
