Red-White Tie 5-5, Reds Take Series
Lincoln – After the Red team took the opener of the Red-White Series on Friday night, the next two games ended in a tie, including Tuesday’s series finale. The Reds trailed 3-0 after four innings on Tuesday, but rallied to take a 5-3 lead into the seventh. The White squad responded with a pair of runs and then kept the Reds off the board, resulting in a 5-5 tie.
The White team led the way with 12 hits, including multiple hits from three different Huskers. Jake Schleppenbach led all hitters with three hits, including a pair of doubles. The Reds got multiple hits from both Angelo Altavilla and Jeff Athey, while Alex Henwood recorded a triple.
The White squad had a chance to put runs on the board in the top of the third when it had a pair of runners in scoring position following an one-out double by Alex Raburn. The threat quickly ended though when Ben Miller stepped in and hit a grounder to first, where Luke Roskam tagged the bag and fired home to cut down Joe Acker for an inning-ending double play.
After Connor Curry notched three strikeouts in the bottom of the third, the White offense plated three runs in the fourth. Mike Waldron led off with a triple and soon scored on a double by Schleppenbach. Zac Repinksi also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Brady Childs added a one-out RBI single to give the White team a 3-0 lead.
Curry tossed 4.0 shutout innings for the White team, allowing just one hit and striking out four.

Altavilla led off with the first of NU’s three straight singles, including a RBI single from Carter Cross. Following a strikeout, the lineup rolled over and Mojo Hagge cut the White lead to one run with a RBI single. Henwood then gave the Reds a 4-3 lead with a two-RBI triple.
The White team tried to answer in the top of the sixth after they got a leadoff single from Schleppenbach and later had two runners in scoring position with one down. Sean Chandler worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.
The Reds tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth, as Altavilla drove in Athey with a two-out double. With a 5-3 lead, the Reds turned the ball over to Luis Alvarado in the top of the seventh.
Alvarado got the leadoff hitter, but then hit two batters and an error loaded the bases. Schleppenbach came through with a game-tying RBI double, his second two-bagger of the game. With the go-ahead run in scoring position, Alvarado recorded back-to-back strikeouts to keep the game tied 5-5 headed to the bottom of the seventh.
The Reds got their leadoff batter on in the seventh, but Clayton Cope retired the top of the lineup to end the game.
Nebraska’s 2017 schedule consists of 55 games and opens on Friday, Feb. 17, with a trip to Tempe, Ariz., where the Huskers will play four games against the UC Riverside Highlanders at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Following 11 games on the road to start the season, the Huskers host Northern Colorado for the 2017 home opener at Hawks Field on Tuesday, March 7.
