First game with a new staff new schemes and against probably what is a comparable team right now. That is how I am going to start this post.
The offense had some nice things going from time to time when they weren't stepping on each others toes, ie penalties. This has been a problem with these players now for a few years and unlearning the things that the previous regime had them doing will take more time. The offensive line needs to get better run plays were getting blasted wide open and there was way to much pressure on TA all game long. I did like the sampling of plays that we used for the most part we can always armchair quarterback ex post facto but the fact is that the offense that they are bringing this year seems interesting though imho not enough higher risk. TA does have a throw the deep ball if there is a route mentatlity at times but sometimes you need to have that route out there unless it was covered all day. The running backs did a decent job considering how much they were rotating, it's just hard to get in a groove when you bust out a couple of good runs they the coaches sub for you.
Defensively we ALL knew that were may have some issues this year for one reason, lack of linebacking depth. And not having Rose-Ivey in this game hamstrung that already thin unit as a whole. Also, we need to understand this completely no team besides BYU probably has three 6-5 to 6-7 receivers that will be coming at us this season. Kalu might have given to much space from time to time but he was solid for the most part on his wrap ups and had a few very nice plays sprinkled in there. Not having Jonathan Rose available again probably was taxing on this group as well with the high heat for the game. The defensive line at times seemed to be playing 2 gap as was Bo's scheme when he was here just holding their lanes and trying to much not to give up outside contain reacting to BYU's QB instead of attacking. Also, Gangwish was in position on at least 4 occaisions early in the game to make a big play on him but well didn't that was a very good qb out there and is very experienced in making one on ones seems like one on nones, kid is good at escaping.
To make a long post even longer
Let's see what happens over the next three games how this team reacts. Miami is the next test when that game come along we will really know how the pass defense is since unless they had a good to great rb ready to go after their guy graduated last year they will be very pass dependant. The other two non-conference games should be w's but Miami will be the test to see if there is improvement.
We have been brow beaten by BP teams the last few years that really do not improve over the course of a season but these guys have alot more experience in them let them have a chance to evaluate what happened in this game as see what they can do better before people start crying for their heads.
Just my humble two cents, chop me to bit if you feel like you want to gonna let this make my point unless someone asks a question
