I think that’s why, they are for profit. Their end goal is to make money. Most of the time, that works, supply and demand create competition for quality and drive prices down (not so much in health care). However, when it comes to greater good, it doesn’t work. Hospitals won’t buy expensive equipment they probably won’t need, because they have stock holders to answer to. Kind of like all the horror stories of for profit charter schools, when the goal is profit, everything else is secondary. That’s why I think someone like the CDC would have been responsible here more than the individual hospitals.

The hospitals in my area are non-profits and are constantly looking for ways to spend money to either get bigger or prevent losing their non-profit status. The bottom line is that no hospital could ever have imagined the need for the number of ICU beds and ventilators this outbreak requires. The next CV will probably be a GI infection that requires more toilets and blood transfusions. Many ventilators sit idle during times other than flu season. Government control always means massive waste.

You need to go read an article in the LA Times today by Joe Mizona(?). He quotes Stanford Nobel Prize winning biophysicist Michael Levitt about his prediction for the outbreak. He correctly predicted the rapid decrease in cases and fatalities which was due to how aggressively they handled quarantines. His view is that social distancing is extremely important and that we'll hopefully see a leveling off and actual decrease in cases in roughly 3 weeks due to that. THAT assumes that people actually do it. There will be a TON of suffering and unnecessary death before that happens and geographically this country is way different than China. I'm afraid that what is in Ohio right now might end up in Omaha next week.

My numbers are the exact numbers that the pandemic models use right now. Pandemic models that were developed by Epidemiologists. They haven't been changed yet, based on Non-Pharmacologic Interventions, but I'm hopeful they will change for the better. When those numbers change, you'll know. Do the math yourself.
