NIL Strikes Again

Pretty crazy story all the way around. The Circa CEO offered it, and UNLV was like 'he's not on the team anymore and wouldn't be welcomed back regardless". Circa CEO is smart though, UNLV football fans won't forget him trying to step up and fix it. Good way to get more locals to visit. I use them for sports betting already but definitely more likely to visit their casino next time I'm on Fremont St.
I haven't been there, but my wife and daughter were last month and said it is an unbelievable facility.
They've been to Vegas many times, said its like nothing they'd ever seen.

So you just flat out believe the school

..well i sure don't believe the kid. he's repped by an agent, and neither of them have anything to prove his claim is true, Nothing, zilch...and the school had somebody willing to pony up the cash and make this go away and turned it down on principal. So yes, I am flat out saying I do not think the kid is telling the truth here

I also heard his agent isn't even licensed to operate in NV, but not sure if that's accurate, either

...full disclosure, if I was the school I probably would have taken the casino up on their offer. I'm 51/49 that I would have done that, but I don't know the kid..I do know one of his teammates put it on social media he was glad the QB left. Take tht FWIW

Beyond just this public money spat, there’s also the dynamics of the locker room reaction to this ordeal. Simply having the casino pay the guy doesn’t make everything awesome again.

the school isn’t really involved they can’t be technically it’s the collective like -1890. What funny about this whole NIL stuff. Shedeur Sanders even with all of his is actually what it’s supposed to be . Almost all of his money he receives is away from the Colorado collective. It’s a true Name image and likeness. Most are just a legal bagman pay for your play.

I know you have a disdain for capitalism, but this doesn't make any sense. Feeding the beast doesn't mean you're greedy. It means you're providing a service.
LOL at disdain for capitalism..... I have a disdain for greed and ridiculous expenditures on unproven/unworthy commodities. NIL is a beast and will be the downfall of college athletics if it isn't rectified. The dollar amounts being thrown around are just stupid.

You can disagree with me...But Ill trust Nick Saban, as well as the multitude of coaches at the college level who find NIL to be nothing more than a unsatisfiable beast!

I hate NIL as much as anyone, but CFB is only getting more popular.

Nick Saban should be the last person criticizing NIL (pay for play) he did for years before it was actually legal.

I agree, but there will be a coming to jesus moment when the money simply cannot meet the demands. Then what?

Don't get me wrong. I have no problem with athletes getting compensated for NIL as well as the added work they do sponsoring and other things. My beef is with the amount of money being thrown about. There will have to be a salary cap or something at some point.

Maybe...I think everyone participated in that to some extent. It's the insane dollar amounts and the unrestricted free agency that the portal provides that are absolutely changing the college game to a professional one. That's the beef for many.

happens every day now.....when a player wants a gazillion dollars and a school can't or won't pay it, they won't, and the kid won't go there. eventually, after nobody meets his silly demand, he will accept less because he will find the alternative of working at starbucks won't cut it. so he'll accept the best he can get...

Or the wealthiest fan bases and schools will scoop them up. Leaving the rest high and dry. Doubt a good player ever gets turned away to the point of working at starbucks. Someone is always willing and able to pay. But is that fair? The NFL doesn't seem to think so.

this is a good question

I assume so, but don't know for sure
Yes, they are. But I can see the day coming when a student-atlete sues the NCAA and his school when he gets into academic trouble and is declared ineligible.

In fact, it already may have started. A few months back a federal judge ruled that transfers without having to sit out should be unlimited. The judge's ruling made no mention of academic progress or good academic standing when moving from one school to the next. We'll find out soon enough whether it even matters anymore.

You can criticize the NCAA and member institutions for a lot of things, but the insistence upon maintaining progress towards a degree for athletic eligibility is something they absolutely did right. Fewr than two percent of college athletes will ever draw a professional paycheck, and even fewer will be set for life based solely on athletic earnings

You are not necessarily wrong. The issue is the majority of players aren’t really getting paid for the Name image likeness. They are getting paid to play for Nebraska etc… I posted above he may be a clown like his dad. But Shedeur Sanders is actually getting Paid for his true NIL. Almost all his money is not tied to Colorado.

NIL is not pay to play, that is 1000% illegal.
Of course NIL is pay to play; believing anything else is just being naive.

Booster: “Hey kid, come play QB at State U and I’ll give you $300k.”

Kid: “Sounds great but isn’t that pay for play?”

Booster: “Nah, just send me a selfie. We’ll say I’m paying for your likeness!”

Kid: “That’s so awesome! Can I get the money if I play somewhere else?”

Booster: “Hell no, you only get that money if you play for state U. But remember this isn’t pay for play, it’s for that selfie….”

NIL is almost always really just pay for play. Unless you’re a hot chick.
