I guess Zach Smith's schedule was too full for these guys, you know, since Coach Dub can't coach?

Seriously, that's some talent. Good to see D Adams coming in to get some good work-outs. Cheese heads are crying for him to break-out. Him, Jordy, & Cobb could be the best trio in the NFL. I have no doubt coach Williams will improve his game

Look at James Jones in 2015. Had a comeback year. He was the only one getting open for Rodgers last year and was basically a must start in Dailey fantasy at the end of the year. I have no doubt that these summer work-outs with coach contributed a bunch to his good season.

Can we just Coach W a lifetime contract already

Or how about our next head coach in about 5-7 years Winking

Seriously! We really lucked out with Williams and Trent Bray. I'm not saying any recruiters are necessarily doing a bad job right now, but these two guys are just incredible!

I don't think luck had much to do with getting Williams and Bray here. Credit Mr. Mike Riley.
And both of these hires were questioned by many Husker Fans. I have to admit that when I first heard that we hired Mike Riley I was pretty shocked and pissed off but reminded myself that I shouldn't judge him til I learned more about him. After a night of reading up on him through various interviews and articles on the internet I came away excited to have him as our replacement for Pelini. Patience is not my strong point at times so I am trying to not judge the Asst Coaches too early because I don't know enough about them, or what they do for the team besides just coaching their position players. I am impressed how Riley acts like a CEO and everything seems to run so smoothly. Now if he can just win us a couple more of those close games then even the naysayers should start supporting him. GBR

That was my reaction to the Riley hire as well. And it was reinforced by last year's dismal season. But I think he will prove to be a good coach in the long run.

His mom thought he'd lost his dang mind.

Raul Aranda told her last Thursday night that he was leaving on Saturday afternoon for Lincoln, Nebraska.

"She looked at me crazy. 'Are you taking a plane out there or something?'"

Nah. Raul was taking his car. Driving all day from New Orleans. All day and into the next day to get coached by Keith Williams.

The sophomore wide receiver at Mississippi Valley State (same school a guy named Jerry Rice attended) had been planning this for some time. He didn't take summer classes just because of this.

"I knew this was going to happen and I didn't want to miss out," Aranda said. "A week of Keith Williams is like a year where I'm at, you know what I'm saying."

Yeah, that Keith Williams, Nebraska's wide receivers coach. He's the coach people around here keep talking about and we keep writing about ever since he showed up to Lincoln about a year-and-a-half ago.

Maybe we've spent too many words on one guy, you think, but then you show up to the practice field outside Hawks Championship Center on Thursday and see a collection of NFL talent who all marked off a week on their calendars in July to show up in middle America and be taught by him.

There's nine-year NFL veteran wide receiver James Jones. There's Ryan Grant from Washington. There's Jeremy Ross from the Jets. There's Xavier Rush from the Eagles. There's Kenny Bell from the Bucs and Ameer Abdullah from the Lions. There's former Oregon Duck and current Kansas City Chief De'Anthony Thomas. There's the college kid who drove more than 1,000 miles here.

So you write what you see and hear. What you see and hear is respect.

"I love his coaching style," said Thomas, who just started working with Williams for the first time Tuesday. He'd heard about the coach from one of his mentors, Keyshawn Johnson Sr.

Johnson told Thomas he's got to get to Lincoln. Thomas, whom Williams always calls "Mamba," was glad he did.

"It's crazy how he coaches this position," Thomas said. "I feel like he's one of the best coaches I've ever come across. … I feel like he knows how to make the job easier. He knows how to beat corners."

Both Thomas and Ross cite Williams' passion for wideout play as one thing that separates him from most.

Ross takes it a little further, though.

"Some people love going to the movies, some people love going to the beach, some people love cars, he loves wideouts, like, wideout play, that's what he does," Ross said. "And movement, he studies it. Some wide receiver coaches, they go in and they're like, 'All right, stick your foot in the ground, go here, go there.' He's studying not just football, but the gravity of it, how movement happens, changing direction, and that's what he teaches us out here."

Williams keeps it light between his cone drills, but also is no easy teacher.
"Let's earn this. Earn it today," Williams tells them after stretches. "You want all your drills to be like a good book. Once you get through your first chapter, you want to go to the next."

When a guy screws up, they hear about it.

"You give everybody a rest! They like when you go!" Williams says to one receiver after a drop, meaning he'll repeat the drill.

"Rossy slept at a Holiday Inn, I see that!" Williams says after a drill well executed.

"RG goin' to Sizzler tonight," Williams says when Grant shows off his fast feet.

All this started with the vet Jones, who was a player at San Jose State when Williams was a coach there. They've never lost contact since. Wherever Williams has been coaching, Jones has come visiting.

"Wherever he go, he sends guys to the National Football League," Jones said. "Whether it's a small school, whether it's a big school, whether it's a junior college, whatever, he's sending guys to the pros."

The pack of pupils keeps growing. For instance, Jones told Ross about Williams while they were playing at Green Bay together.

The first time Ross took on the coach's drills, "I was looking sloppy out there, honestly. He was super honest to me about my game. He said, 'Hey, this ain't looking good.' And I appreciate his honesty. Regardless of who you are, he's not going to pump you up. If you look sorry, you look sorry."

Ross said Williams is the guy staying up drawing drills while his wife is trying to sleep.

Such passion for the craft is why Ross showed up in Lincoln on Sunday and isn't leaving until Saturday.

Similar itinerary for Jones. He's staying at The Cornhusker Marriott. Grind on Monday and Tuesday. Take off Wednesday. Grind again on Thursday and Friday.

Jones likes the camaraderie that builds with the other receivers during this week with Williams. He keeps track of them when they part ways.

"That's the funnest thing for me is seeing them take his coaching to the football field," Jones said.

He's known Williams for 15 years now. At this point, the advice goes both ways. Jones had some of his own for the coach when he first took the Nebraska job.

"I told him, man, he's going to get a lot of exposure here, turning these guys into NFL wide receivers, and he's going to get probably a lot of NFL offers," Jones said. "And I told him, 'When you start blowing up, don't be fielding those NFL offers. You're changing these college kids' lives on this field.' I truly believe that's bigger than getting paid a couple hundred-thousand more dollars."
