Overall Takeaways: I think it’s safe to say the hype balloon burst after Saturday. This doesn’t look like a team that is a College Football playoff dark horse or a consensus pick to win the west division either. Having said that it wasn’t all bad. The Defense and Special teams were vastly improved in particular in the secondary and D line. The Offense sputtered all day and really couldn’t piece anything together, I know everyone was freaking out about the OL, myself included but we aren’t as far off as I thought watching it live. After watching this first game over and taking a serious look at this team. I can say confidently we are a better team than last year, how much better? That remains to be seen. I think we’re a 6 to 8-win team (I was saying 4 to 6 wins watching it live). I was hoping we’d be an 8 to 10-win team but I just don’t see that right now with how our interior OL and offense looked as a whole. Here are my position group breakdowns as well as my notes for every play on the offense and defense. Go Big Red!

Offense Breakdown:
QB: Adrian was not his usual self today. Missed a lot of reads in the pass game and really forced some throws that he shouldn’t have, I’m not too worried about him cause we all know what he can do.

WR: This staff is very high on Wandale he can make a lot of guys miss in space and they manufactured a lot of stuff trying to get him going and really couldn’t which was a bummer. JD looked awesome but he got dinged pretty good early and he was a nonfactor after that. Noa is a big body but just seems like another guy not a huge difference maker but then again grad transfers rarely are.

TE: Way better than last year Stoll and Allen have both really come on. Their perimeter blocking is way better and we all know what they can do in the passing game. Really happy with how this group performed.

RB: Not at all impressed with Dedrick Mills, I know everyone was up in arms about how the OL performed but I would place just as much if not the majority of the blame on Mills lack of vision. There were times the OL carved out a nice hole for him and he’d just barrel forward into a pile and pick up 3 yards where if he had hit the right hole, which is imperative in a zone blocking scheme he’d have had a chunk. He is no Devine Ozigbo, which is what the staff was hoping for him to be. We all need to hope and pray Mo gets his legal matters resolved because we are a completely different offense with him in the backfield. That kid is a special talent and I hope for the team’s sake we can keep him around because we desperately need him.

OL: I know the pitchforks were out for Cam Jurgens and I was sharpening my own, but here’s the deal. He really didn’t perform that badly. Yes, he had quite a few bad snaps but there were a lot less than I originally thought. Here’s the thing about Cam though, he is a better blocker than Will Farniok by quite a bit I see what the staff sees in Cam and I think if he can continue to improve he can be a very good center. That being said our interior OL is very shaky this year Boe Wilson leaned on Farmer and Foster a lot last year and it showed. Hixson has an awesome story and he’s worked really hard to be in this position but he is absolutely the weak link in this line right now. He missed a lot of blocks and just flat out got beat on way too many plays. The good news is Jaimes is a great Left tackle, I don’t think I saw a single play where he got beat or didn’t provide a good block. Matt Farniok had a nice game too but there were a few hiccups in his game that I’m sure will get ironed out, but the tackle spots aren’t anything to be worried about. It will be interesting to see what this line looks like moving forward. Frost has proven he’s not afraid to move guys around to get the best 5 out there and it may be something to look out for down the line.

Defense Breakdown:

DL: I can tell why the staff was so high on this group, very deep pretty athletic has everything in the tool box for what this staff wants to do. Darrion and Damion Daniels both had really solid games they are exactly what we need for noses in this scheme giant and pretty athletic given there size. Both Davis’ and Stille had nice games too. Like what I saw from this group.

LB: When the staff said we lacked depth at LB they weren’t kidding. Outside of Mo Barry who was his usual self-there isn’t a lot behind him. Honas had a terrible first half, he continues to underwhelm me but he was better the 2nd half. Colin Miller is okay but not really a starter at this level more of guy that can come in and spell. Jojo and Tannor both showed some really nice flashes but neither were all that consistent, want to see consistency from the going forward. Really surprised I didn’t see more of Ferguson and I completely forgot about Alex Davis. I thought he had a nice game overall. He just struggles mightily in pass coverage. All in all we need those young guys to mature fast because this group is the weak link in an otherwise strong defense.

DB: Wow, this group has come a long way since the beginning of last year. Way more athleticism and discipline than I’ve seen from this group in about 5 years. What a difference having the same coach for more than a year makes. L Jax and Bootle both look like really strong corners and Cam Taylor had a very nice day in his own right. The awesome feel good story of the day had to be Eric Lee though, he played really well coming in cold for Deontai Williams who lacked discipline in his limited time. All together I feel very good about this group and really happy with what Fisher has done for this group.

Offense Game Notes:
Offense:

1. I formation 21 Personnel, Toss right to Wandale. Jurgens disengages his block to go to the next level, Hixson doesn’t pick it up, NG and host of USA players tackle Wandale. Gain of 2

2. 2 by 1, 11 personnel, Stoll in at H back right, Jet motion Wandal left to right. High snap, fakes jet sweep to Wandale, Adrian hits Stoll on what looks like a post snape RPO, flare route. Stoll cruises for about a gain of 15.

3. 2 by 1 R, 21 personnel, Bubble motion Wandale from L to R, Inside zone bubble RPO, Adrian reads Nickel staying home on bubble, feeds ball to Mills on the inside zone. Mills looks like he wants to cut it back but backside DE makes a nice play to get an arm on him and slow him down enough for the LB to get to him. Gain of 1.

4. 2 by 1 L, 11 personnel, false start on RT Farniok. Loss of 5

5. Broadcast cut away from field. Can’t tell formation looks like 21 personnel. Adrian has Wandale open in the flat, hesitates and throws it at his feet. Incomplete

6. 3 by 0, 11 personnel, Stoll tight to Left. Mills motioned to right out of backfield. USA safety comes up to cover it on bubble. Adrian hits JD in stride on a post for a gain of 20.

7. 2 by 2 stacked, 11 personnel, Adrian hits Mike Williams on a quick screen. USA flag 12 men on the field.

8. Can’t tell the formation, fakes power to the left pulling Farniok, hits Stoll on the seam for a huge gain.

9. 2 by 1 R, 11 personnel, high snap, switch zone to the left. Hixson and Cam get beat through a double team. Mills tackled after a gain of maybe 2.

10. 2 by 0, 12 personnel, Jumbo R, jet motion JD L to R, high snap, USA does a nice job of beating our guys playside, Mills does the right thing and cuts it backside. Falls forward and has what looks like a TD that is reversed.

11. 2 by 0, 12 personnel, inside zone read, well blocked, Mills plows forward for the touchdown.

12. Can’t tell the formation, power to the right with Mills, Mills reads this one completely wrong. Giant gaping hole if he just follows Jaimes through it on the pull. This one could have been 6. Gain of 2 instead

13. 2 by 1 R, 11 personnel, Jet motion JD L to R, inside zone read, USA sending an overload blitz to our R, Adrian makes the right read to keep it. Piss poor blocking by Farniok and Noa loss of 3.

16. 2 by 0 L, 12 personnel, Jumbo R, Stoll motioned L, Inside zone bubble RPO, nickel stays home on bubble so Adrian gives it to Mazour on inside zone. This looks like miscommunication because nobody picked up the Mike backer and Jurgens and Wilson both got manhandled on this play. Loss of 2.

Mike Williams and JD with nice downfield blocks to get a gain of 7. It was 3rd and 10,

19. 2 by 1 R, 11 personnel, we drop back to pass, USA isn’t fooled. Looks like they are spying Martinez and he realizes it and stays in the pocket after it looks like he initially wanted to scramble. Tries to hit Wandale on scramble drill. Wandale falls over and the pass is incomplete. Turnover on downs. Had Stoll and JD wide open

20. Ace Bunch, Adrian under center, quick motion and give to Wandale to the left pretty good blocking all around. Gain of 9.

21. 3 by 1 R, 11 personnel, inside zone read with backside bubble RPO. DE stays home, USA does a nice job of beating our guys playside so Mills cuts it back but too early and gets tackled by the zone read key. Haven’t been impressed with Mills at all thus far.

22. 3 by 1 L, 11 personnel, ball snapped over Adrians head loss of 20.

23. 2 by 2, 11 personnel, pass to Mazour on a flare route good downfield blocks but USA is in prevent defense. Gain of 15.

32. 2 by 0, 12 personnel, Jumbo R, PA pass, Adrian has Allen who’s 6’8” against maybe a 5’8” corner, he’s wide open behind the line. We try an illegal pick play here but instead of running into the corner JD runs into Noa and Adrian floats it a little outside. Incomplete.

33. 2 by 0, 12 personnel, Jumbo R, Jet motion Noa L to R, inside zone read, pretty poor blocking all the way around no gain.

39. 3 by 0, 11 personnel, outside zone RPO, goes straight for Adrian, who has to take a sack for loss of 11. Had JD wide open, If Wandale just chips him it might have been 6.

40. 2 by 1 R, 21 personnel, straddled triple option, DE stays home, Adrian gives the ball to Mills who has a wide open hole between Hixson and Jaimes and he runs it up the gut for a gain of 4 when he could have had 20+

41. 3 by 0 R, 11 personnel, Mills bubble motions R, Martinez hits Mills on a bubble and sails it a bit which throws off the timing and he can only get 3 yards out of it.

67. 3 by 1 L, 10 personnel, pass, Khalil almost got to him, hits slot receiver on an in route over the middle, Colin Miller and Mo run into each other, Carlos chases him down after a gain of maybe 8.

68. 2 by 0 R, 12 personnel, Jet motion R to L, inside zone, host of Huskers tackle him after a gain of 3 or 4.

69. 2 by 1 L, 11 personnel, speed option L, Jojo makes him pitch it, Colin Miller and Bootle do a good job of shaking off blocks to tackle him for no gain.

70. 2 by 1 R, 11 personnel, pass, ball thrown behind the receiver on the slant bounces off his hands into Cam Taylors for the pick, Cam out ran his blockers there, and needed to cut it back or Tannor should’ve thrown a block it would’ve been 6.

71. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, Still and Ferg give good pressure off the edge, Damion almost has him in the backfield but can’t quite get there, Mo and Cam Taylor clean it up after a gain of 9.

72. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, switch concept, new QB stares down the receiver and throws it off his back foot, Eric Lee is there to jump it for the pick.

73. Can’t tell formation due to broadcast being late. Looks like a bubble stick concept, throws the ball at his feet incomplete.

74. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, almost a safety throws it over the middle on a crossing route, incomplete.

75. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, tunnel screen, piss poor excuse for a tackle by Carlos he bounces off it and picks up about 25 before being tackled by a host of huskers.

76. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, floats it over the middle to a wide-open receiver on a post route, Dismuke saves the touchdown.

77. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, wants his receiver on the far sideline on a back shoulder, good coverage by Bootle.

78. 3 by 1, 10 personnel, coverage sack by Khalil Davis.

79. 3 by 1 L, 10 personnel, bubble motion L by RB, pass, tunnel screen left, Thomas comes up and makes the tackle after a gain of maybe 4.

80. 2 by 2, 10 personnel, pass, wants his man deep on left sideline, throws it out of bounds. Husker ball. Ball game.

Great breakdown! From what you saw, were the blocking errors lack of experience, ability or first game jitters? I.e. is it fixable?

In my opinion it was more a combination of Mills complete lack of vision, man he was disappointing, i'm getting Greg Bell vibes, and lack of experience between Cam and Hixson. Cam is a great athlete and Hixson is pretty athletic given his size as well. I think they can both become solid O lineman moving forward. We absolutely have to have Mo Washington play though. He is by far our best back and a total game changer in the backfield.

Yeah there were several times Mills could have cut it to the outside where nobody was. Our OL wasn't opening any holes in the middle, which is where Mills always tried to go. I thought Hixson looked like our best lineman, which isn't saying much quite frankly. Jaimes, Wilson, and Farniok all took a step back from what they were last year.

Losing Foster and Farmer hurt a lot more then I think most people thought it would. Those guys played a ton of snaps for us for a long time. I think Jurgens and Hixson can be just as good they are both just really young and inexperienced. I have no idea where Mills was going the majority of the carries he got. It's very telling when one guy struggles mightily for an entire half to get yards and as soon as we put Mo in he's getting 9 yards a carry. Holes were there, Mills wasn't finding them.

Did you happen to notice what happened to Jurgens on the QB sneak on 4th down?? If not take a look!

Just got done re-watching the first half. Really, Adrian didn't look near as bad as made out to be. Had maybe 3 bad passes the first half, and was thrown off by a lot of missed opportunities or self-momentum generating plays. Had essentially two TD passes that could build his confidence get caught out of bounds by Noa or get PI'd. And he took a nasty hit at about 1:07 in the 2nd quarter that he brushed off but definitely would be quite the stinger and would effect his throws. Running a cookie cutter offense with no down field shots and having a center that can't hit him with consistent snaps just killed his rhythm. The more alarming thing was definitely lack of push by the o-line over Adrian's play (at least for the first half, will watch the second here soon).

I disagree with a few of the takes on the defense. Collin Miller and Jojo Domann both played really well. Honas was mediocre and Tannor was a liability. Mo Barry didn't have his best game. DE is still a weakness.

We're definitely going to need Mo to hit the outside runs if Mills can't do it. If we can't run inside against S. Alabama, not sure there's many teams we will be able to do that without an outside running threat.

And second half, it's more of the same on offense. Seemed like Frost designated drives to be specifically tailored for one player which was way too forced. Washington was the primary option it seemed for every play on two of the drives and Wandale the other. Not to mention the super slow pace which was probably meant to give the defense a breather. Adrian had one terrible decision which led to the pick, but he otherwise did what was best on 75% of the plays based on how they were drew up (ex. QB draw for 3rd&10 on the 45 yard line when you have a backup kicker). Just weak play calling leading to weak stats. Defense played stellar the whole second half, only time they got beat was usually when a linebacker took a step in the wrong direction on man or zone coverage. And the o-line had an improvement from the first half, although was far from what should be considered good against USA. Too many negative people on here, re-watch the game because Adrian did decent for getting put into the situations he was thrown into. And the defense was vastly improved from last year.

Williams got hurt on the late hit. Looked like he gave himself a stinger throwing his neck into the guy's hips, you see it in the way he gets up.

He tried to play through and couldn't. Lee may have taken his job while he was out.

Mills will probably be ok. First game, he has only been on campus a little while. He isn't trusting his eyes yet. Maybe trying to do too much and attack the first little crease he thinks he sees.

Several guys trying to do too much on Saturday.

The good news is he misses a read and gets 2 yards instead of missing a read and losing 2. No big surprise that an RB who has only been there a month isn't seeing things like he should yet.

To me Nebraska looked and played like a team afraid of losing. It's game one with many more to play in a season we're hoping to win 7 or more games. Was it pretty? Not even close! Lets just wait and see what happens. Hopefully we meet our 7 win goal with everything beyond that being a plus. Next game!

The most positive thing I saw was the defense. This is the kind of D that will be judged on stopping big plays and generating turnovers. I think they did both of those jobs pretty well Saturday. Our linebackers are the weak link in the team this year, but we've made a lot of progress in the secondary and on the line.

You betcha, Miller & Domann were simply terrific and desperately needed.

Most of the issues Mills had were IMO patience to some degree. He's a get up field back and hit holes hard. No pussy footing around. The down side of that is that sometimes it doesn't give you a chance to see the crease open up. LAST YEAR, some people bitched about Washington dancing around and not hitting holes hard early on. With both guys, as Frost said about Mills, it's mostly about being unfamiliar with the offense and not being sure where the opportunity for openings are going to present themselves. He'll get better. He runs really hard and on multiple occasions got positive yards after being hit at or behind the LOS. Washington had the benefit of coming in the game after their defense had played quite a few plays as well.

The play before that is even worse.
You can find on almost every game video over the course of a game, O linemen getting rag dolled or whiffing on blocks. I don't care how good they are. Our O line was pretty darned good at the end of the year last year. I'm just hoping Austin can fix our problems quickly. Watching Jurgens most plays I saw him hold his own pretty well. I can see why they like him. At least he wasn't getting knocked in to the backfield every play like Pelini did.

It's wk 1. It looked scripted and uninspired. I know it's our job, but we are really looking way too far into this as a whole. Need more of a sample size before we pass judgement IMO.

And I was disappointed thoroughly with the team. But so much can change. I will be very disappointed if we lose to Colorado. Let's hope some of the kinks get worked out.

I truly believe all the praise we received for doing jack shit led to this poor performance. Judging by the stubbornness in play calling, our coaches bought into it too

Mills is better than the interior OL, the kid is going to be fighting for yards all year. It pains me to see how we patchwork together our OL every year. Would agree our tackles are descent.

Not crazy about our DE but see us better in the 4-3 again this year, especially against power running teams like Wisky, we are going to get blown off the ball.

Pretty much the same story, until proven otherwise. Frost has done a pretty good job filling the recruiting cupboard at OL/DL but has a long way to go.

Williams got hurt when he made a good play on a pass toward the flat when he was wrapping the guy up. Williams spot isn't up for grabs, it would be Dismuke who would be replaced before him.

ozigbo was no ozigbo week 1 last year, either
Actually he was, he always looked like our best back last year. Here is my RB breakdown from the CU game last year:
" Running backs: Devine is the bell cow of the group. he has good enough speed, vision and elusiveness but he has physicality in spades. He can’t be brought down without a gang of defenders. He’s far and away the best back. Mo Washington is going to be big time, He has Reggie Bush level Elusiveness and Speed, we have not had a homerun hitter like that in the backfield in a long time. Greg Bell, I wanted to be impressed because he got the lions share of the carries but I didn’t see much from him. He’s the most complete of the 3 backs but from what I can tell he’s a jack of all trades, master of none. Let me roll with Devine who is a bruiser or Mo who’s a slasher. Where was Miles Jones?"

Well spoken.

umm.. you expect this to give you some kind of credibility?
Completely ignore the fact I called Devine and Bell both right. Blow up one thing I said and still believe, Mo is every bit as elusive as Bush. I've forgotten more about this game then you'll ever know.
