Nebraska Hockey

As a former player I agree with you HuskerHusaria, but the same old people tell you why Hockey would never work at UNL and I'll tell you why, they don't know a blueline from a redline, it's called ignorance of the sport. I always thought the fans of Nebraska sports would love the game of hockey because it's a fast physical sport, but I think I know their problem, they just don't understand the game.

Maybe someday those nay sayers will stop and really take in a game someplace and change their minds about a great game a game I personally had to quit due to injury, I really miss playing. Sorry for those that are missing out on a great game and show.
There is actually a rather large and rabid hockey fanbase in Nebraska. Between USHL, UNO and HS club plus the NHL fans that are born from this exposure I think Husker Hockey would be highly successful. The Bank may be too large and not as intimate as most college barns which can suck the atmosphere out. College hockey is not like professional hockey in that regard. The culture is smaller, more intimate and rabid.

I frequent UNO hockey games and I don’t see many fans traveling from Lincoln and west to Omaha for that. However I do believe there would be a contingent that would flow from the Omaha metro west to Lincoln to watch Husker hockey.

Ultimately success breeds attendance and UNO shows that mediocre success during a season drops attendance to around 6k a night while rivalry games with the likes of UND sell out.

The Stars will take a hit such as the Lancers did… but again success breeds attendance there as well… I don’t see the Bank being a good partner for Husker hockey but I’d love to see a program started.

Pioneeer League has teams from California to Florida. They would probably fit in the D2 Great Lakes conference.
I believe Drake is in it, there would be one regional foe. But Ohio valley/big south would be better, 2 in Missouri 2 in Illinois. Anyways until someone donates 100 or 200 million $ there will be no football team. Who knows if it’s true that they pledged that UNL would not create a hockey team in trade for UNO not having D1 football?

I don't know so I'm asking: Is the Ice Box University of Nebraska property since the old state fairgrounds were given to the university system like a decade or decade and a half ago to create the research park?

Obviously the Ice Box is VERY Stars branded, so neutering that like Haymarket Park was for the Huskers and Saltdogs would feel weird. But the Ice Box feels like the right size for a hypothetical UNL varsity hockey team unless some deep-pocketed booster or groups of boosters wants to build a dedicated arena. I would think scheduling between the Stars/USHL and UNL/Big Ten could be coordinated to make sure they aren't both at home the same weekends.

I haven't been to a Stars game in years, but it still felt like as close to a quintessential hockey barn as you could expect nowadays the last time I went. I'm not a fan of the big screens as I feel it is too distracting from paying attention to the action on the ice; keep the info as minimal as possible on the scoreboard (time, score, SOG, penalties). Now get off my lawn ;).

The Ice Box is VERY dated. UNO arena is so much nicer a world apart
Yes… so dated… and would be hard to recruit to that facility when you see the UND digs etc.

I think there is a market for it. The club team can coexist as UNO also has a club team.

Is there room to build onto Breslow so they could have practice ice and competition ice? I’m not familiar with that space
