Big Ten Coach of the Year Will Bolt has received a contract extension and pay raise after leading the Nebraska baseball program to a conference title in 2021. Interim Nebraska Athletic Director Garrett Klassy made that announcement on Thursday evening.

Bolt, who completed his second season with the Huskers in 2021, received a one-year contract extension and his deal now runs through June 30, 2026. In addition, Bolt will receive a $100,000 increase in his annual salary.

"The work of Will and his staff in their short time at Nebraska, both on the field and in recruiting, speaks for itself," Nebraska Interim Athletic Director Garrett Klassy said. "Will is the right leader for our baseball program. He understands the history of what makes this program successful, loves Nebraska and embraces the passion of our fan base. We are committed to providing the resources necessary for Nebraska Baseball to achieve at the highest level and compete for trips to the College World Series."

Bolt guided Nebraska to a 34-14 record in 2021, including a 31-12 record in Big Ten play, with the Huskers capturing the league crown by 3.5 games. Nebraska advanced to its first regional final since 2007 while posting a 3-2 record in the Fayetteville Regional.

Bolt and his coaching staff have done impressive work in recruiting. The Huskers' 15-member 2021 recruiting class, which includes a trio of top-200 prospects, is ranked second in the Big Ten and in the top-40 nationally by Perfect Game USA.

"It is an exciting time for Husker Baseball and I am very appreciate of the support our administration and University leaders have extended to our program," Bolt said. "My staff and I look forward to continuing to work hard every day to make Nebraska Baseball one of the nation's best programs. We are thrilled to be at a place like Nebraska where we have support at every turn. Go Big Red!"

Remember what happened when Scott Frost got a contract extension. Perhaps it was a bit premature to extend Will Bolt's contract.

Not sure if serious. Bolt won more games in a regional in his first try (3) than Erstad did in 7 years as head coach (2). Bolt took over a program that lost its entire starting pitching rotation from 2019 and while it didn't look good in the shortened 2020 season, he busted his ass through a pandemic and pieced together a rotation and bullpen good enough to win the Big 10 by a comfortable margin and, again, win 3 games in regional play. He has heightened emphasis on in-state recruiting, now aided by Childress being not only gone at A&M but back in town in the front office, and also opened up a little pipeline with Adam Stern in Canada. I could continue, but the future of Nebraska baseball looks leagues ahead of Frost and football.

The reality is, Will Bolt had one good year out of the two he has been here. Not exactly a good sample size to work with. Similar to how Frost had one mediocre season at UCF before going 13-0 and being heralded as someone who was going to return Nebraska back to their glory years. It might have behooved Nebraska to wait a couple seasons before extending Will Bolt's contract to be sure that he isn't just a flash in the pan, and this season just happened to be his one good season before everything comes crashing down.

The actual reality is, coach Bolt has coached 1 season at Nebraska & not 2 as you claim. And in that one season he accomplished:

1. B1G championship
2. Top 25 final rating, first time since _____ (@HuskerFan31?)
3. B1G POY + additional awards
4. B1G COY
5. Freshmen POY & AA
6. 4 first team all conference players
7. Second round draft pick
8. Third round draft pick
first time at Nebraska in 16 years

And much more...

While losing an entire weekend rotation, best offensive player and freshmen All American closer. Coach Bolt more than earned his raise & extension, regardless what happens in 2022.

What Frost did at UCF is irrelevant, and the same applies to his extension at Nebraska. It's irrelevant.

Why waste time? Let's just fire him now, right?

So don’t extend him and risk him heading back to the Big 12 or SEC? Because if you don’t invest in your coaches someone else will. I don’t think there will be any concern buying out a baseball contract if it didn’t work out for some reason. You are quite honestly wasting your time even debating this issue but have fun trying.
