Just another week for Riley, win some lose some...he probably doesn't even understand what the fuss is about.
I was somewhat curious about the season, to see what "Riley's QB" could do now that Armstrong is gone. No surprise it's exactly what we thought it was, Beaver ball.
Shut out in the first half by NIU. They were coached up pretty well I'd say. Knew exactly what to key off of and jumping routes. Riley, doesn't even bother attacking them downfield with double moves to loosen them up a bit. Even Miles was calling for it, then he did it like one time with 8 minutes left in the game. A bit late there bud. A competitive coach sees DB's jumping routes and doesn't hesitate to attack.
You see, here's my problem with Riley in a nutshell. The dude isn't competitive. Mediocre is no big deal. The guy was happy to sit at Oregon St. for 14 years and retire. Luckily for him, we have an idiot that decided to make his retirement a lot richer.
I feel bad for Lee. He's obviously not as good as advertised, but in his defense if the guy doesn't go for 350 and 4 touchdowns every week we're probably going to lose. That's a lot of pressure with a bad play caller and bad offensive line. An offensive line that got pushed around by a MAC school. His biggest flaw (in my opinion) is he lacks that 6th sense on when pressure is coming. The sack that caused the fumble that was overturned came from right in front of him and he just ate it. Had no idea it was coming. Maybe with a few more games under his belt he'll regain that 6th sense. If he doesn't, we'll probably lose him to a concussion pretty soon, he's getting destroyed. He's also throws a bad deep ball if he has to put air on it.
Running game was sad. I was very optimistic to see what Wilbon could do in a full game. I have no clue what the final stats were but I'd be surprised if he averaged much more than 4 yards a carry. Why didn't we try Ozigbo a bit more? A back like him might have worn NIU down. Regardless, it's sad that we couldn't control the line of scrimmage to establish the run against a MAC school.
Problem is, I just don't think it matters. I just don't think that Riley is a smart enough coach to gameplan against good teams, let alone MAC teams. It feels like we should have more. Morgan Jr, El, with a couple good freshman at WR. A decent TE. A good enough QB. Decent RB's. More than enough to handle a MAC school. Getting shut out in the first half is 100% on coaching, gameplan and play calling. I know our line is bad but again, that is on coaching and lack of recruiting.
KState is ranked. Colorado is competitive again. Penn St overcomes rape, sanctions and a head coach leaving for the NFL. Michigan overcomes Brady Hoke and quickly becomes very strong. Washington is a top 10 program again. Why are we settling for MEDIOCRITY? Why did we not hire a proven winner? Why are we content to let this program slip further from relevance every year?
Iowa, Wisconsin, KState, Colorado....these teams should not be better than us.
Oregon could have dropped 70 on us if they hadn't fallen asleep at halftime. I'm tired of reading people on the forums saying "we're this close to 3-0". No we're not. I have some friends that went to the Oregon game and they said half the fans left at halftime. Be glad they took their foot off the throat.
Sorry I just had to get that all off my chest.
