Lincoln – The University of Nebraska Department of Athletics announced several initiatives Wednesday to honor the legacy of Husker football player Sam Foltz, who was tragically killed in a car accident last month.
Today’s announcement includes a football scholarship that will be awarded in Foltz’s honor, as well as renaming one of the top Life Skills Awards for student-athletes at the University of Nebraska.
The Department of Athletics will award one of its 85 football scholarships in honor of Sam Foltz. The Sam Foltz Memorial Scholarship will be presented annually to a member of the football program who embodied Foltz’s traits of leadership, excellence in the community and in the classroom. The 2016 scholarship recipient will be recognized on the field prior to the Huskers’ season opener against Fresno State on Sept. 3.
The Husker football team will honor Foltz throughout the 2016 season with a special SF27 decal which will be on the Huskers’ helmets. The SF27 logo will also be featured on players’ gameday hats, sweatshirts and compression shirts, as well as on the coaches’ sideline polo shirts.
To recognize his outstanding contributions in the community during his time at Nebraska, the Hero Leadership Award will be renamed the Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award. Beginning with the 2017 Night at the Lied ceremony in April, the award will be presented to 27 student-athletes across all sports who exhibit strong leadership qualities, commitment to service and ability to encourage/empower peers.
Foltz was one of the recipients of the 2016 Hero Leadership Award for his community outreach work.
