Nate Gerry will have a monster game.

He's been very up and down this season. But he showed up under the MSU spotlight three weeks ago. I think he will have a good game too.

I think the coaching has been there all year, i think injuries and players not fully buying in at first was the issue. Now we got everyone back and seems like there all on the same page now. We are finally looking good as a football team. It does help a lot then we found a solid running game with Cross and Jano, power game is game on.

I agree that his activity level has picked up, but he's not good in one on one situations in open field.

He's better suited playing an area and breaking on the ball. Our linebackers will play tight and attack which will leave Gerry in the perfect spot.

He's gonna eat up the TE release on play action.
Which one? Iowa frequently plays two at the same time, on occasion 3.

With LBs in, look for Iowa to pass. All of them move, and one has exceptional speed for a TE.

Bring an extra db in, particularly on 2nd and medium/long, or 3rd and medium, and Iowa runs it right at you with a blocking mismatch size wise. It is a real dilemma, and one of the under the surface things that has made them very effective this year. Even good safety is often marginalized. This is a huge storyline in this game.

Additionally, #17 is a very large receiver for Iowa, tweener b/w TE and WR, and a good blocker. Gerry is going to have to come up big - LOTS

I talked about this earlier in the year. We're built to stuff the the double tight formation. And both teams that live off that set we had major success against... Minnesota and Michigan State. Our inside tackles allow us to dominate run heavy teams.

yes to the tackles, and MSU scored plenty to win a football game.....anyway the question remains how ends, lbs and safetys deal with Iowa double tight on the stretch play, or when the best TEs are running roues on pedestrian LBS. Something will give here and it is a primary story line for Neb D vs the Iowa O.

By group Iowa G,C, G are its best lineman vs Nebraska's staunchest part of its DL. Frankly, I think its push, maybe advantage Nebraska since it marginalizes a faction of the Iowa running game. Iowa tackles vs Nebraska ends...probably slight advantage to Iowa, which is more about the ends than the OTs. Iowa TEs vs NB LBs/Safetys IMO is a real advantage for Iowa. Outside, those guys from each team are going to just run around with each other most of the day.

other side of the ball, Nebraska will move it. Iowa has little pass rush, they know it, there will be 7 guys defending pass routes. Friggin crap shoot for what that means to TA. With one game left, maybe CMR allows his legs to be a part of the attack (consistently)

Michigan State is a better team with better athletes then Iowa. Our ends and linebackers are built to stuff the run plus we have the athletes to run with Iowa's TE's and WR's. We won't be chasing like we did against spread offenses. Iowa will play smash and throw off it. And that's what we want.

Iowa is 4-3 vs. Dantonio. The 2012 game was an Iowa win, despite the 4-8 Hawkeyes.

Michigan State has been badly banged up in the offensive line this year. While they were outstanding in 2013 and 2014, many don't believe they are as talented in 2015. More chinks in the armor for the Spartans this year.

We likely will find out on 12/5, when Iowa vs. Michigan State occurs, but Iowa has a good offensive line, especially in the interior line. Austin Blythe is playing outstanding at C. Iowa has enough athletes on offense. A far improvement from OC Greg Davis' first three years at Iowa.

Iowa's LBs are a really nice element to the 2015 team. Much more like 2013, then not.

peace

Our safety play has been a glaring weakness all season, largely due to confusion in the new scheme originating with our linebackers. In the new coverage scheme our safeties struggle with handing off receivers and assignments, and if the everyday Joe can see that, so does Ferentz & co. Be more concerned with how Iowa's run game goes. We've been good at shutting down the run for the most part this year, and Friday's game will hinge on this. Iowa is a solid team that doesn't beat itself. Nebraska is a flawed team that has a bigger ceiling and lower floor than Iowa. Friday will be interesting.

Iowa is not a "run heavy" team. Their total offensive yards this year are almost split identically between pass and run.

Gerry has been a major disappointment this year. What leads you to believe he will have this monster day? He along with the rest of the secondary have been less than stellar all year. I dont know why he will all of a sudden become a great tackler.

Have some faith.

Agree here. Can't think of a good game he's had all season

Exactly. Of all the players we have on this team, RR70 couldn't come up with someone that has been playing better than Gerry? He may as well have said that Ryker Fyfe was going to bring it on Friday.

Wait. You're claiming Michigan State DOESN'T have more talent than Iowa?

Certainly not on the offensive side of the ball. Outside of Burbridge, name a great athlete that they have on offense?

Iowa has the better OL, RBs, and TEs. QB is a push. Burbridge is a stud, but the rest of Iowa's receivers are more than comparable to anything else that Sparty has.

Trying to say that MSU is better on offense is just ridiculously stupid, to the point that I seriously doubt you've even seen both teams play this year.

Have some faith.

Faith is not my problem - reality is. For someone who played LB a year, his tackling is suspect. He is at his best playing deep center in a 1 tech, in a two he doesnt get to the outside and in a run support he drops his head and takes bad angles. Faith wont fix that. I hope he has that monster day but just hoping doesnt make it so.

That was an attempt at levity. But you need to have faith=believe in yourself to be successful. That's one of the reasons Davie was sat... he lost faith in his ability. Iowa will run which we'll play close to the line. The majority of passing yards are to the tight end off play action... It's classic Kirk. We won't be playing our safeties deep because of the offense Iowa runs. Gerry will be making these plays around 15 yards down field. Not the normal 20-25 yards against a spread offense. Call it a shallow zone if you will. Plays will be there to be made.

And as far as tackling...
He's played damn good against Michigan State against the run.
