Safety: Marcus Williams, Utah and Nate Gerry, Nebraska
Few safeties have made an impact quite like Williams who has two interceptions and a pass defensed to go with a forced fumble and recovery. He’s the only safety in the nation to rank in the top four both against the run and in coverage. Gerry has the nation’s top coverage grade at 92.1 and he’s done a fine job of cutting down on the missed tackles that have plagued him in the past – he’s made all but one of his 26 tackle attempts. https://www.profootballfocus.com/college-football-pff-early-all-american-team-lamar-jackson/

That Nate Gerry..his "lucky" streak continues. I need to get the lottery numbers from the "luckiest" DB in Husker history!!:rolleyes:

Cornerback: Howard Wilson, Houston and Chris Jones, Nebraska
Wilson has touched the ball nearly as often as the receivers he has been covering as he has three interceptions and two passes defensed while allowing eight catches for 51 yards on his 19 targets (2.7 yards per target). Opposing quarterbacks have a passer rating of 10.1 when targeting him. Jones has two interceptions and two passes defensed on his 23 targets and he’s yet to miss a tackle this season.

dudes got the talent, but it still looks like he's missing some stuff. We need him to be great.

Lots of foolish comments in that thread. Makes me wonder if a few have any understanding of football.

I remember young Nathan coming in as a recruit, how time flys. Somewhat off topic but he's been solid and deserves more credit. GBR

Oh, I think we know why there are fans that don't talk about them and/or think they are just lucky

Having Banker and Stewart break up DB coaching responsibilities has been paying dividends (as well as familiarity with the new system).

I have been critical of Gerry in the past and including a few plays this season that he DID mess up on but overall he has looked good this year, he made a real nice play right in front of me at the Oregon game when he came up and made a tackle on a swing pass that I thought was impressive.
My critical assessment in the past is validated by the OP, however, as it mentions his struggles with tackling in the past, which was my main reason for being critical of him. Hopefully he can keep up the improvement because if he is an AA at the end of the year it means we win at least 10 games.

And yet Huskers fans rarely talk about either. Why?
You know when a DB is doing a good job is when no one is talking about him. The best DBs game films are boring because the QB doesn't throw at them.

Certain fans notice but not many. It's like a middle relief pitcher in the 7th inning. No one notices him unless he gets rocked. No one ever states, way to close down that 7th. No news is good news.

I was actually thinking this about Kalu lately. Doesn't seem like they're throwing at him. Makes Jones more noticeable and he's rising to the occasion. Very good stuff.

For a few years, i have been a Nate G hater. Not on this board because it is not necessary. I must admit, he definitely is a baller. He will make a great pro ala Lynch from the Bucs/Broncos

Nate has answered the call this year for sure. This is the Nate we all hoped for when he came to Nebraska. A big physical guy who can run and hit. He has made several "splash plays". Particularly in the run game as hes sniffed out many screens and been the saving tackle.

I have been critical of guys like Gerry and Bando and Gerry has definitely got it turned around this year. Hes playing at a very high level right now. Im not sold on Bando yet BUT he played a pretty good game as well Saturday ...as did the LBs as a whole.

Ill tell who im REALLY liking right now is Aaron Williams. Dude is "steady Eddie" and has great feel for a game. I really love this guy and his skill set.

holla

Nate is a LB playing safety? Pretty sure the dude holds the 200M record in South Dakota. Granted that's SD and not Fla, but anyone who holds a record like that is plenty fast to play safety.

Gerry has stepped up his game in a big way and is no longer a weakling in pass coverage. He has looked great....Williams has his unit really playing well.

https://nebraska.forums.rivals.com/threads/nate-gerry.152037/ I'm gonna revisit this thread all year up until he's drafted.
Safety: Nate Gerry, Nebraska 91.0 and Jamal Adams, LSU 90.0

Our top coverage safety at 94.0, Gerry is tied for fifth among safeties with four passes defensed while adding two interceptions. The big improvement in his game is his tackling where he’s only missed three all season. Adams has done it all for LSU, and he has the top grade against the run at 85.4 to go with the No. 7 mark in coverage at 88.3. https://www.profootballfocus.com/co...l&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=college
