It's very rare for any QBs, at any level of football, to be live in a Scrimmage. I dobut Riley has ever done this before. So why now? I believe there are a few reasons:
1. The coaches believe AJ Bush is winning the job, but are apprehensive because Bush has never faced legit contact. They want to see how he responds to pressure and getting lit up.
2. Zac Darlington is intriguing the coaches because he's grasping the scheme faster than everyone else. He doesn't have great arm strength, but his accuracy and progressions are the best. I believe the coaches want to find out if he can legitimately take a hit at this level.
3. Johnny Stanton, by all accounts is struggling with different aspects of the offense. But I'm betting the coaches realize he's a bruising athlete. Imo, they want to see him with the ball in his hands, showcasing his physicality.
4. They know Tommy has started 20 games. They've seen him handle a shot to the face. I doubt he won't even run the ball on Saturday.
I think they may be testing Darlington to see if he has a future here.
They might be trying to convince Stanton into a position change.
