First off, that camp was absolutely insane and I totally feel like we have a legit shot at anybody and everybody that we want after the experience the kids just had. They had music going it seemed like all the campers were having a good time. The west side of the stadium was over half full of fans that had some great "Go Big Red" and "Husker Power" chants going. We were definitely an educated group of fans and really let our top commits or prospects hear our applause after making a good play.
Our top guys - Keyshawn, McQuitty, Lewis, Lyndsey, Bookie were noticeably much much better than the rest of the people and someone that wasn't a diehard football player would notice them apart from the others. I can't even fathom those guys playing high school football this fall. I think Bookie was by far the best player at camp today. He was going back and forth with Joseph Lyndsey and just completely shutting down every other WR he faced in the one-on-one drills.
Our coaching staff missed no opportunities to show love for our top targets and current commits. There were a ton of hugs, handshakes, extra one-on-one coaching being done to Keyshawn, Lyndsey, Lewis, Bookie, etc. The coaches clearly knew what they were doing and didn't waste a second of having these guys on campus.
There is a very, very good connection between Gebbia and all of the California WRs - not just his teammates at Calabasas. Lots of mutual respect between Gebbia and top California WRs that were there and you can tell they are all very close friends.
O'Brien was working with the QBs and had some very very impressive throws. He was sinking fade passes into a small net barely bigger than a basketball hoop from 35-40 yards out. Me and my buddies were in shock. He is also very close with guys like Keyshawn and I saw them laughing and playing around with a lot of the campers there.
Nate Gerry is a freak of nature. Somehow he looks even bigger than last year and permanently looks like he's flexing. He was running drills and I could distinctively hear his voice barking commands from up in the bleachers. That guy is going to be nuts this year.
I was able to speak to a guy that I know that works in the athletic department and he said that this coaching staff is something that has the makings of something great. He said that since Bray isn't married or dating anyone right now that he is 100% committed to Nebraska football. He said he will oftentimes stay up to 2:00am or later watching film and will frequently sleep in his office to get an earlier start to the next day. He said that Bray is also at every single event like conditioning, weightlifting, etc. that the coaches are allowed to attend and doesn't miss a single opportunity to be around and check-in on the progress of his guys. Very very hard-working and hands on kind of guy.
He also said that Rose-Ivey is currently in insane shape and this person believes Mike is going to have a crazy good year this year. He's cut bad weight and is faster, stronger, and in the best shape of his life. He's worked his ass off in the weight room and the entire coaching staff has noticed.
Devine Ozigbo is apparently super jacked as well and his time here with nutrition and strength and conditioning has worked wonders for him. He is very very thick and is a speedy bulldozer that is going to have a great year.
I got an update on Pierson-Els and was told that he looks better and better every day. His confidence is high and he's not slow to rotate or change direction like the coaches initially worried. I was told that the main thing with him right now is that he gets sore sooner and when the soreness sets in it affects his technique. Coaches and strength coach surely expect him to be 100% though by the start of the season and each day is better than the last.
As I posted earlier, at the start of camp Joseph Lewis and Bookie were signing autographs right next to Riley for a solid 30 minutes before camp started. All 3 of them had ear to ear grins and long, long lines to get helmets, shirts, and footballs signed and pictures with fans 6 months old to 80 years old and everywhere in between. I truly felt like it was a wonderful experience for all of them, including Riley.
Riley was an absolute boss out there tonight. He walked around the different stations like a General observing his army and watched his coaches do their work. Recruits definitely took notice when they saw Riley walk by and he was looked at like a celebrity for most of the campers. As mentioned earlier, Riley also never missed an opportunity to give Keyshawn Jr a handshake or Joseph Lewis or Bookie a friendly head nod.
Overall I don't think I would have changed anything at all about the camp. The staff did a great job of doing drills and maximizing the time they had as well as made the rounds and showed love to both the fans and the top talent. Never in my life have I seen so much talent on the field at once like tonight. There were kids that looked insanely good that I had no idea who they were. Receivers, defensive backs, you name it. Seeing all those athletes run around out there and compete to have our coaching staff notice them and compete against top competition and then having our very top prospects and commits spend almost an hour with the fans singing autographs and thanking us for coming gave me the chills.
I was talking with Coach Williams for a while and got a picture with him and congratulated him on all his success. When we parted ways I looked up and said "Wideouts For Life" to him and he heard me, turned and faced me and said "ALL DAY" with the most serious, beady-eyed look I've ever seen in my life. I immediately wanted to run through a brick wall and/or head butt the closest person to me. That guy is an absolute machine and worth his weight in gold to this program.
I even got to chat with Mr. Sean Callahan tonight.
Thanks guys,
PH
