When/who was the last time the Huskers beat a ranked non-conference opponent?

Thought I heard Notre Dame in 2001.
YES! The Irish in '01. Good job N-sane. I actually went to that game. Night game on national TV. ESPN Game Day was in town. Crouch and company dominated.

Many peoples lives soon changed after that game 'cuz this was the weekend just prior to 9-11 terror attacks. Just to put a time frame on things.

Wasn't that the last time the Huskers best a ranked non-conference opponent in the regular season? I'd be surprised if one of the bowl wins over the last several years wasn't against a ranked team.

Wow, that is weird to think about. I remember being at a friends house for the ND game and I obviously remember 9/11, I would have never associated those memories as close events.

Well perhaps during the regular season then. I think your right. Georgia might have been ranked when NU beat them in whatever bowl they last played in.

Thanks for doing the research on this, Tuco. 3 years is much better than 15 years, but still to have a 15-year dry spell in the regular season is nuts. Looking back at those games, I think we should have won at least one of those Va Tech games, but I don't believe we were ever even competitive against USC in either of those games. Those USC teams were juggernauts.

I am more concerned that there were only 6 games in 15 years against ranked teams in the non conference regular season

With that little of a sample size it's like saying until last Saturday, Nebraska hadn't beaten a team from Oregon since 1986. Well they hadn't played any either.

I noticed that, too. In some cases (Miami stands out in my mind), we've scheduled what we anticipated to be tough (likely ranked) opponents, and then when the game rolled around, they weren't ranked. I believe we have tended to try to schedule 1 difficult non-conference opponent each season. Sometimes it pans out where they're ranked, sometimes not. We haven't done a good job of beating the teams that have been ranked, but we did beat Washington twice in the regular season, and blew opportunities to beat ranked Va Tech and UCLA teams.
